Each year the Global Health Office creates employment opportunities for Dalhousie students. These positions support our programs and provide the students with professional development to complement their studies. This year we welcomed 3 students and wanted to showcase the diversity and talent they bring to the office. Watch for their input in our blog posts and on our social media accounts.
Mercedes Stemm
Mercedes Stemm is a Mi’kmaq woman born and raised in Eel Ground First Nation, New Brunswick. She is in her last year of her Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Neuroscience and minoring in Indigenous studies. At Dalhousie’s Global Health Office, she is the Indigenous Health in Medicine (IHIM) Program Assistant a position that she has held for just over a year. During her time in the Global Health Office, Mercedes was given the opportunity to create a program for undergraduate Indigenous students interested in medicine. She chose to begin a mentorship program that would connect Indigenous medical students/health professionals with first and second-year Indigenous undergraduate aspiring health professionals. Her interest in global health stems from her identity as an Indigenous woman and at Dal Global Health she is able to bring her vision of more representation of the Indigenous community in the medical field to life. During her time with the Global Health Office, Mercedes has expanded her knowledge of Indigenous health and global health as a whole. With this knowledge and experience, Mercedes plans to pursue a medical degree and continue her work as an advocate for Indigenous communities in medicine.
Yolanda Watunga
Yolanda Watunga is a third-year Bachelor of Science student in the Health Promotion Program at Dalhousie University. At Dal Global Health, Yolanda works as the program assistant for the Promoting Leadership in health for African Nova Scotians (PLANS) program. In this role, one she has held for nine months, Yolanda primarily focuses on supporting students of African descent at various levels of education through community engagement and managing PLANS virtual presence. Yolanda’s interest in global health was inspired by her mother’s work as a global health researcher and her time in university as a health promotion student. Yolanda’s role at the Global Health Office has expanded and enriched her understanding of global health work and the impact organizations and programs have on communities nearby. Yolanda plans to continue her education in the health discipline through a master’s program in health promotion or global health.
Michelle George, BSc
Michelle George, an international student, is currently a second-year master’s student in the Community Health and Epidemiology program where she focuses her research in the nutrition field. She is the most recent addition to the Global Health Office team, beginning in October 2020 as an outreach assistant. Currently, her role at Dal Global Health mainly centres around curating social media posts in support of all the programs that are run through the office, writing blog articles, and familiarizing herself with programs run by the office. Michelle’s passion for global health comes from her interests in nutrition research and the important role nutrition plays as a determinant of health. Although her time at Dal Global Health has been brief, her understanding of global health has begun to evolve to include a more holistic view of health. After completion of her master’s program, Michelle hopes to begin her Ph.D. journey in nutrition research.
