Interview with Tim Jordan, Photo Contest Judge
Why do you like being involved with our photo contest?
I’m always interested in seeing and hearing the experiences of Global Health learners through their photos. It takes one to locations that I’ve never experienced myself.
How do you select the winning image?
That’s a tough one. A winning image needs to connect with me in an emotional and/or cerebral way. The basic “rules of photography” are a good start (the rule of thirds, good lighting, good cropping to focus the attention to the main subject – composition and framing, depth of focus to make images pop, etc.). That said, rules are made to be broken at times. Capturing the feeling versus taking a snapshot is the main difference in creating a great photo.
Why do you think images are a good way to share a message?
It goes back to the cliché – a photo is worth 1000 words. In many cases, a good photo elicits an emotional reaction, which carries more weight and lasting impact than words.
Has the contest impacted your understanding of health? If so, how?
I’d say so – impact being the key word. Although you hear about challenges, lack of education or clean water or waste systems in developing countries, the images of those sit in my head long after.
