On Friday May 4, 2012 the Global Health Office hosted the Atlantic Global Health Research Forum: Building Community through Global Health Connections. Among the collaborative and informative sessions were the Global Health Awards Presentations. The 2012 recipient of the Dr. John Savage Memorial Award for Faculty Leadership in Global Health is Dr. Patricia Livingston, Associate Professor of Anesthesia and Medical Director of the Global Health Office of Anesthesia at Dalhousie University.
We are thrilled to see Dr. Livingston’s leadership and commitment to Global Health recognized. Dr. Livingston is a staff anesthesiologist, with subspecialty training in chronic pain management, at the QEII Health Sciences Centre. She is also the Medical Director of the Global Health Office of Anesthesia and is passionate about her work to improve the practice of anesthesia in collaboration with the National University of Rwanda. In 2008 Dr. Livingston attended Anesthesia in Challenging Environments, the first global outreach course of its kind offered in North America. Attending the course inspired her to volunteer with the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society International Education Foundation (CASIEF). As a result, she participated in teaching missions to Rwanda in 2008, 2010 and 2011. During Dr. Livingston’s visits to Rwanda, she provides education, training and leadership to resident anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists. She has also been involved in creating overseas electives for Rwandan residents and mentoring students through the Global Health Fellowship Program. Dr. Livingston also co-produced Ikinya, a documentary on the practice of anesthesia in Rwanda, to help raise awareness of the work.
On May 19-22, 2012 Dalhousie University Department of Anesthesia will host Global Outreach 2012: Anesthesia in Challenging Environments. For more Information click here.
