We are thrilled to see Dr. Livingston’s leadership and commitment to Global Health recognized. Dr. Livingston is a staff anesthesiologist, with subspecialty training in chronic pain management, at the QEII Health Sciences Centre. She is also the Medical Director of the Global Health Office of Anesthesia and is passionate about her work to improve the practice of anesthesia in collaboration with the National University of Rwanda. In 2008 Dr. Livingston attended Anesthesia in Challenging Environments, the first global outreach course of its kind offered in North America. Attending the course inspired her to volunteer with the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society International Education Foundation (CASIEF). As a result, she participated in teaching missions to Rwanda in 2008, 2010 and 2011. During Dr. Livingston’s visits to Rwanda, she provides education, training and leadership to resident anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists. She has also been involved in creating overseas electives for Rwandan residents and mentoring students through the Global Health Fellowship Program. Dr. Livingston also co-produced Ikinya, a documentary on the practice of anesthesia in Rwanda, to help raise awareness of the work.
