Accepting Terms and Conditions in myCareer

Before students can review myCareer co-op job postings or submit a self-developed work term record for an upcoming work term, they must review and accept Management Career Services’ Terms & Conditions which outline key responsibilities and regulations for all students throughout their job search efforts. The option for students to accept Terms & Conditions will only appear once recruitment for the upcoming work term period has been opened by MCS. Students need to re-accept Terms & Conditions at the beginning of each work term job search period to be eligible for posting or work term record submission access.

Follow these instructions to review and accept your Terms & Conditions in myCareer:

  1. Log in to myCareer: https://mycareer.dal.ca/login/student.htm
  2. Click on Management Career Services in the main menu (left-hand side of the screen if viewing from a laptop/desktop computer)
  3. From the Management Career Services dashboard, you will see a variety of Quick Links. Scroll down the page past those Quick Links to review your upcoming Work Term schedule. If recruitment for the upcoming work term period has been opened by MCS, you should see “Accept Terms and Conditions” under your next upcoming work term period.
  4. Once you select “Accept Terms and Conditions” a pop-up window with will appear. Read the content and select “Accept” at the bottom of the pop-up window.
  5. If all other eligibility requirements have been met and the MCS work term job postings have been already opened to students, then once you have accepted the Terms & Conditions you will be able to access the MCS work term job postings, and the option to Add a Work Term Record will now appear on your profile.

If you have already accepted your Terms & Conditions within the correct upcoming term, but still have no access, then either the postings have not yet been opened to students or the following eligibility requirements may also need to be met (contact MCS for more details as needed):

  • Completion of outstanding co-op/internship preparation tasks
  • Work term course registration in DalOnline
  • Proof of a valid Co-op Work Permit provided to the MCS office (for international students only)

The Professional Dress Code: Decoded

When it comes to figuring out what to wear on the job, sometimes it’s not clear at first what is meant by terms like “Business Professional”, “Business Casual”, or “Casual Friday”. However, there are certain standards you can apply to safely determine what will look appropriate. If you’re not sure what the dress code is for your workplace, your best bet to ensure a positive first impression is to show up on the first day wearing a business professional outfit. Then, once you arrive, observe the office environment and ask an experienced colleague or your supervisor what the expectation will be on a day-to-day basis.

Some general tips to keep in mind:

  • Be cautious of bright or distracting colors and patterns.
  • Avoid see-through materials.
  • Shirts and pants should always be pressed with no
    wrinkles.
  • Keep your professional dress shoes shined and in good
    repair.
  • Avoid running shoes.

Here are some guidelines to help you understand the difference between different workplace dress codes.

Business Professional

  • Suit jackets/blazers/pants/skirts should be in matching colours
  • Conservative ties
  • Solid, dark or neutral colours (navy blue, black, or grey)
  • Professional shoes that are shined and in good repair, brown or black shoes to compliment your suit color
  • Closed-toe heel or dress shoes

Business Casual

  • Suit jackets are not necessary
  • Ties are optional
  • Plain-colored, collared shirts, cardigans or sweater-vests in a wide range of colors are generally accepted
  • Nice pants/slacks
  • Professional shoes that are shined and in good repair, brown or black to compliment your casual yet professional look

Casual Friday

  • Jeans, khakis, or corduroy pants are acceptable
  • Plain or plaid shirts, golf/polo shirts and company shirts are all acceptable
  • Loafers are acceptable; avoid sneakers/runners and refrain from wearing shoes that have holes and are dirty or raggedy
  • Sweat pants and shorts are not appropriate
  • If you are going to wear leggings, ensure they are made of thick material and worn with a long top reaching at least to your hips

Student Spotlight – Gurpreet Singh

Gurpreet is a First-year Corporate Residency Master of Business Admin student who used effective networking and time management skills to land himself a dream work term. Keep reading to hear his story and top tips.

Originally from India, he decided to move Canada after working for five years in a consulting company.

When asked about his decision to chose Dalhousie, Gurpreet said the eight-month internship opportunity and high return on investment were major factors. Gurpreet also said that he loves the beauty of Canada.

Currently, he is on his work term with Deloitte as a Strategic and Operational Risk Analyst. He chose Deloitte because the work was inspiring and challenging,  which would be a good fit for him because, as he said, “I love to think outside the box!”.

While talking about managing a heavy academic workload, Gurpreet added that “success is all about time management and efficiency,” and made use of the MBA and MCS offices for helping him during his job search and interview.

“MCS has been super supportive and helpful to me during my entire journey of job search and interview preparation. Special hearty thanks to Ally Howard, Cindy Ryan, Ayse Dai- Gammon,” said Gurpreet.

“During my internship search, the MCS team provided me with regular updates and feedback. Also, special hearty thanks to Dan Shaw and Julie Tarry for always helping me balance my studies and motivation.”

Gurpreet’s short term goal is to improve himself to the extent that people can see the difference and guide him better for the next milestone. In the meantime, he is also learning about Canadian culture. His long- term goal is to make his parents proud and use his experience and skills to help the community globally.

Tips of the week from Gurpreet:

  • Read English articles daily and try to converse on those topics with people around you.
  • If you’re talking to any fellow international student, please try to speak in English rather than a regional language.
  • Visit the writing center on a regular basis to improve your writing skills.
  • Feel free to speak with people from different backgrounds. Sometimes, conversing with a bachelors/masters student (not from your stream) would help understand how to break the ice.
  • Definitely visit the International Students center on a daily basis, it has been a great experience for me.
  • Set hard goals for yourself and try to achieve them.

Student Spotlight – Henry Locker

Henry Locker is a third-year Bachelor of Commerce student who recently completed a four-month co-op in Vietnam as an Asia Representative. Originally from Halifax, he chose Dalhousie’s Commerce program for the mandatory co-ops and the opportunity to gather a real work environment while exploring multiple industries. “The co-op program is very reputable and unique with 3 staggered co-op placements. This gives me the ability to test the water in many industries” said Henry.Henry

Henry used his networking skills and reached out to friends’ families to find this job. Over the last fall, Henry secured a self-developed job with Confederation Partner in Vietnam, an international finance and service company. Confederation offers many methods for high net-worth individuals and their families to become dual citizens in Canada, USA, European Union, and the Caribbean Islands. He was attracted to this job because the work was inspiring, and he enjoys the satisfaction that this service offers. As an Asia Representative, he performed a variety of different roles, finding the appropriate location for an office at an appropriate price and working with the marketing team to market the company to prospective clients. He was a keynote speaker at 8 seminars with attendance ranging from 30 to 100 people.

Henry spoke to us about his transition, saying “The biggest difference between working in Canada and Vietnam is that Its very common for a workweek in Vietnam to consist of Monday through Saturday 8am to 6pm, and it’s common for most people to even bring work home with them. Even the communication preference is different, most people used an instant messaging app instead of email.”

After Graduation Henry is looking to do his MBA at Dalhousie and continue to explore options in different MarHenrykets. To follow Henry’s success, follow him on his Instagram @henry_lockyer .

Upload your Transcript in myCareer

Recruiting employers often request transcripts from work term students for job applications or hiring compliance checks.

In most cases, an unofficial transcript (also called an academic record) will suffice; you can download this PDF from DalOnline at no cost, and the steps to do so are listed below.

Quick Steps:

  1. Download transcript from DalOnline through Web for Students – Academic Record
  2. Log in to myCareer > Management Career Services (co-op) or Career Services (summer/grad jobs) > My Documents
  3. Click on blue Upload Document button > Name file and identify as Transcript
  4. Click on Choose File > Select transcript > Upload Document

If required, note that official transcripts do incur a fee and must be created by the Registrar’s Office.

A request for an official transcript can be submitted through DalOnline or in person via an Enrolment Services Centre.

A tailored resume and cover letter is a standard expectation when applying to any job posting. However, some employers also request your transcript be submitted as part of your application package. By logging on to Dal Online, you can access an unofficial transcript that will satisfy this requirement.

First, you need to access your unofficial transcript:

  • Log in to https://dalonline.dal.ca/
  • Click on Web for Students
  • Select Student Records
  • Select Academic Record, then click on Academic Record again
  • When it opens, make sure to save it on your computer. It should automatically save as a PDF.

Now, you need to upload it to myCareer:

  1. Log in to myCareer: https://mycareer.dal.ca/login/student.htm
  2. Click on the Management Career Services option from the main menu if you’re applying for Co-op or Internship jobs. Students looking for recent grad jobs, summer employment, part-time, full-time (non co-op), casual, or volunteer opportunities can click on the Career Services option.
  3. Under the Management Career Services section, click on the Work Term Documents icon. Under the Career Services section, click on the Documents menu option.
  4. Click the blue Upload Document button.
  5. Name the file, identify the type of document as Transcript, click Choose File, select your transcript, and click Upload Document.

Your transcript should now be visible in your list of documents and can be added to application packages as needed.

How to create Your Work Term Record (WTR)

Note: The option to submit a Work Term Record will only appear to students once recruitment for the applicable work term has been opened by MCS, AND once you have accepted Terms & Conditions.

Quick Steps:

  1. Log in to myCareer > Management Career Services > Scroll down to blue button titled Add Work Term Record > Fill out all * fields > Save

Did you find your own co-op/internship job outside of the myCareer job postings?

Are you returning to your previous work term employer?

Once you have accepted the position offered by the employer, follow the steps below to learn how to create your Work Term Record and submit your self-developed job for approval:

  1. Log in to myCareer: https://mycareer.dal.ca/login/student.htm
  2. Click on Management Career Services
  3. From the Overview page, scroll down until you see the Work Term Records heading
  4. Accept Terms and Conditions, if not already completed
  5. Click the blue Add Work Term Record button to the left of your active co-op sequence below
  6. Fill out all required (*) fields on the form found in the section labeled STUDENT SUBMITTED WORK TERM DETAILS
  7. Click on the blue Save button to complete the process. Note: if you do not click save, the details of your record will not be submitted to MCS for approval.

Details cannot be edited after you submit your work term record for approval, so if you have any changes that need to be made to it, email them to mcs@dal.ca.

After you submit the work term record, it will be reviewed by your assigned Career and Recruitment Specialist (CRS). The CRS will contact the employer directly to verify all details and alert you once the employer has responded and approval status is determined. In some cases, you and/or the employer may be asked to provide additional information before approval can be granted.

Please be aware that once you have submitted a work term record for MCS approval, your status for your other job applications will be marked as “not available – employed” and your access to myCareer co-op/internship job postings will be suspended for the hiring period. Do not submit your record until you have secured the position and are firm in your intention to use it as your work term. Before completing the work term record, consult your Orientation Workbook (or the Student Handbook if you are a CRMBA student) to confirm the specific work term requirements for your program.

Receive notifications of new jobs in myCareer

Quick Steps:

  1. Log in to myCareer > Click Blue Circle icon (bottom right) > Search Postings
  2. Select Co-op/Internship from the pop up box > Click on blue Search Job Postings button
  3. Conduct an Advance Search > Save search results > to receive emails on new jobs > Save

Did you know that you can receive automatic email notifications when new positions are posted on myCareer? This is just another way to make your job search easier! Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Log in to myCareer: https://mycareer.dal.ca/login/student.htm
  1. Click on the Blue Circle Icon in the bottom right corner and select Search Postings, then select either “Full/Part time, Volunteer” or “Co-op/Internship – Faculty of Management” in the box that appears. Students looking for their Co-op or Internship position must click on the “Co-op/Internship- Faculty of Management” option.
  1. Click the blue Search Job Postings button at the top of the screen to search all jobs or conduct an advanced search using any of the following criteria:
  • Date Live
  • App Deadline
  • Featured Posting
  • Organization
  • Term Posted
  • Job Title
  • Job Location

Your search criteria will generate a list of jobs based on your selections. You then have the option to click Save My Search Results which will save you time when conducting a similar search in the future.

  1. Create a name for your search in the “Save this search as” box (i.e. Fall 2019 Co-op Positions, Graduate Job Opportunities, etc.)
  1. Below the “Save this search as” box, check the box that says, “Email me new jobs for this search”.
  1. Click Save

When new job postings (in accordance with your search criteria) are added to myCareer, you will be sent an email notification. Only one email is sent per day that will contain all new job postings.

If your Dal email account is not your primary or most frequently checked account, and you are concerned about missing either a myCareer notification email, or other emails from Dal (since all communications must be sent to your Dal account only), you can set your Dal emails (Office 365) to be forwarded to another account. Dalhousie University’s recommended best practice is not to forward all mail, therefore, if you choose to set up a forward to another email account you are accepting the potential risk.

  1. Login to http://my.dal.ca
  2. Click the square made of nine tiny squares (usually upper left) and choose Outlook
  3. Click the * gear icon (between the bell and the question mark) in the upper right
  4. In the bottom right, click on View All Outlook Settings
  5. In the left-hand panel, under Mail, click Forwarding
  6. Click “On” the option for Enable Forwarding
  7. Enter the e-mail address you want to forward the e-mail to in the white space underneath
  8. Click the Save button at the top

How to complete your Work Term Acceptance Agreement

Quick Steps:

  1. Log in to myCareer > Management Career Services > Scroll down to Work Term Record Details
  2. Click on Employers Name or Related Forms in the right column > Work Term Acceptance Agreement > Create Record > Follow steps for completion

Upon approval of your work term record by MCS, or confirmation of your myCareer job acceptance, you must review and submit the standard Work Term Acceptance Agreement Form in order to complete the job approval process. This form should be submitted through myCareer prior to the start of the work term.

In accordance with Dalhousie’s International Travel Policy, students completing a work term outside of Canada, whether in their home country or alternate, will also be asked to register their travel with Dalhousie, complete various pre-departure steps as outlined in the policy, and review, sign and submit a paper-based Work Term Outside of Canada Acceptance Agreement, acknowledging the final steps required to prepare for your work term out of country.

If it is determined that a student or employer has provided untruthful information or misrepresented any aspect of the work term, including but not limited to the student’s work location, payroll, supervision or hours/weeks worked, the student may be removed from the work term and face additional academic consequences. To avoid this outcome, please ensure all work term details and/or changes are communicated to the MCS team as soon as you are aware of them.

To access the standard Work Term Acceptance Agreement in myCareer:

  1. Log in to myCareer: https://mycareer.dal.ca/login/student.htm
  1. Click on Management Career Services
  1. Scroll down until you see the Work Term Records heading
  1. Within the co-op sequence in the right-hand column, click on the Related Forms button for your relevant work term record. In the dialog boxes that open, click on Work Term Acceptance Agreement and then click on Create Record, and follow the directions for completion.

Upon approval of your work term record by MCS, or confirmation of your myCareer job acceptance, you must review and submit the Work Term Acceptance Agreement form in order to complete the job approval process.

This, along with creating your Work Term Record, should be submitted through myCareer prior to the start of the work term.

Booking an MCS Staff Appointment in myCareer

Management Career Services offers a wide range of services to BMgmt, BComm, and CRMBA students, including one-on-one appointments. During a 30-minute one-on-one appointment, your Career and Recruitment Specialist will provide career development and job searching guidance to meet your individual needs.

We provide appointments for:

  • Guidance in meeting work term eligibility criteria
  • Your job search and networking strategy (including working abroad)
  • Interview preparation and practice
  • Resume and cover letter review and revision
  • General career development questions

Not sure who you should be meeting with?

  • BComm: Most students in the Commerce Co-op program will have a Career and Recruitment Specialist assigned to them by the beginning of the job search semester for their first work term. You can see who you have been assigned to by clicking on the CO-OP tab of your homepage dashboard in myCareer. In the box labelled Co-op Record on the left, you will see the name of your assigned CRS listed in the row labelled ‘Co-ordinator(s)’. If a CRS has not yet been assigned to you, you can meet with any CRS offering appointments for the Commerce Co-op program.
  • BMgmt: Several CRS provide service to BMgmt students, and you can book with any offering appointments for your program. Note that there are two different BMgmt appointment types, depending on whether you are seeking general career coaching or information about the Internship program.
  • CRMBA: Several staff members provide service to CRMBA students, and you can book with any offering appointments for your program.

Follow these simple steps to book an appointment in myCareer:

  1. Log in to myCareer: https://mycareer.dal.ca/login/student.htm
  2. Click on Management Career Services in the main menu (left-hand side of the screen if viewing from a laptop/desktop computer)
  3. Click the Appointments icon and select MCS Staff Appointments
  4. Choose one of the following options:
    • View Calendar: see all available appointments with all providers.
    • Book Appointment by Type: select your program or specialty appointment if applicable (e.g. Work Abroad or Management Internship)
    • Book Appointment by Provider: choose the MCS staff member you wish to meet with, noting the type of appointments they offer, which are listed directly below their name in the appointments calendar. Then select the available appointment type (your program, or specialty appointment as described above). Please note that appointment type options you see after selecting a provider represent all appointment types offered by MCS staff, not the available appointment type options for the provider you selected.
  1. A list (or calendar) of available appointment dates and times will appear. Select your preferred day/time.
  2. Reconfirm the type of appointment you are seeking.
  3. As most MCS staff work hybrid schedules, the appointment mode will indicate whether it can be offered in person, virtually, or either. If choice is provided, select which mode you prefer for the appointment.
  4. Enter a phone number where you can be reached and the reason for the appointment. Then click Book Appointment.
  5. Upcoming MCS staff appointments will be displayed on the Appointments page under My Scheduled Appointments. Click on the View Appt button above the appointment you wish to display to view the details or cancel that appointment. If you choose to cancel an appointment, a box will pop-up on your screen asking for you to provide a reason for cancelling.

If you need to book an urgent appointment or reschedule an existing appointment booking within the next 24 hours, please call our office at 902-494-1515, email mcs@dal.ca, or visit Rowe Suite 2100.

For non-urgent cancellations (more than 24 hours in advance), please log into myCareer and cancel your appointment by following steps 2-7 above. This will allow the time slot to be booked by another student. Failure to cancel, or no-show to multiple appointments, may result in the loss of online booking privileges.

For appointments concerning resume and cover letter revision or interview preparation for a specific position, please send in your documents and/or the job description at least 24 hours in advance so that your appointment provider will have time to review and prepare prior to your appointment.

If you are not currently enrolled in the Commerce Co-op, Management, or CRMBA programs, a Career and Recruitment Specialist can offer you a one-time 15-minute courtesy appointment. Please contact mcs@dal.ca or 902-494-1515 to schedule.

How to post a new job in myCareer

Quick Steps:

  1. Login to myCareer > Post a Job > select Co-op/ Internship – Faculty of Management in the pop-up box > Post a New Job
  2. Fill in all job details > select Through myCareer as Application Procedure > Upload company logo (if desired) > Submit Posting for Approval

Follow these easy steps to post a job on myCareer once your account has been approved.

  1. Log in to myCareer: http://mycareer.dal.ca/login/employer.htm
  2. Click on the blue Post a Job button or the blue circle icon in the bottom right corner of the screen and select Co-op/Internship – Faculty of Management in the pop-up box.
  3. For instructions on how to repost or reopen an existing myCareer job instead, click here.
  4. Click Post a New Job
  5. In the Company Information section, remove any contact details you do not wish to show on the job posting. We ask that you leave your name/title so our students can address their cover letters. Your email addresses and phone numbers are never visible to the students in the Management Career Services job posting module.
  6. In the Job Posting Information section:
    • Select the relevant Term Posted from the options available in the drop-down list, if you know it;
    • Enter the total Number of Positions available;
    • Enter the Job Title;
    • Select the Job Location. You may choose “multiple locations” if the job location is available in more than one province;
    • Select the Targeted Program that matches your needs;
    • Enter your Rate of Pay and Hours per Week information;
    • You can opt to indicate whether Canadian Citizenship is required. Please note: selecting Yes in this field will exclude students who are not citizens, but are legally entitled to work in Canada (example: international students on a work permit, permanent residents of Canada, etc.)
    • Enter the Job Description for your posting into the text box provided and adjust the formatting as needed;
    • Enter your Job Requirements (or qualifications) into the text box provided and adjust the formatting as needed;
    • Enter any extra details into the Additional Application Information text box and adjust the formatting as needed;
    • In the Application Information section:
      • Select the date and time for your Application Deadline
      • Choose “Through myCareer” as the Application Procedure but if you intend to collect applications directly through your own website, indicate that by entering the specific URL in the field marked If by Website, go to
      • Select the required Co-op Application Documents. Please note: our undergraduate students are required to submit a cover letter and resume for every application in the myCareer system.
    • If you wish, you may upload your Company Logo to the job posting.
    • Once you have entered all of the information on this page, you can either Preview it or Submit Posting for Approval. Once submitted, a staff member will review the posting and may contact you for more details or clarification. When the job has been approved and made available for potential applicants to view, you will receive an auto-generated email confirmation.
