Access your myCareer account

  1. Using your Dalhousie NetID and password, log in to your myCareer student account: https://mycareer.dal.ca/login/student.htm.
  2. Once myCareer has opened, you will be presented with various menu options to access the different services and features available to you, as well as a dashboard that connects you to your personal account information, job search documents, interview, event and appointment activity, and co-op records. Two of the more popular sections of myCareer include the Management Career Services section or the Career Services section. Click here for a summary of what each section has to offer.

Upload your Transcript in myCareer

Recruiting employers often request transcripts from work term students for job applications or hiring compliance checks.

In most cases, an unofficial transcript (also called an academic record) will suffice; you can download this PDF from DalOnline at no cost, and the steps to do so are listed below.

Quick Steps:

  1. Download transcript from DalOnline through Web for Students – Academic Record
  2. Log in to myCareer > Management Career Services (co-op) or Career Services (summer/grad jobs) > My Documents
  3. Click on blue Upload Document button > Name file and identify as Transcript
  4. Click on Choose File > Select transcript > Upload Document

If required, note that official transcripts do incur a fee and must be created by the Registrar’s Office.

A request for an official transcript can be submitted through DalOnline or in person via an Enrolment Services Centre.

A tailored resume and cover letter is a standard expectation when applying to any job posting. However, some employers also request your transcript be submitted as part of your application package. By logging on to Dal Online, you can access an unofficial transcript that will satisfy this requirement.

First, you need to access your unofficial transcript:

  • Log in to https://dalonline.dal.ca/
  • Click on Web for Students
  • Select Student Records
  • Select Academic Record, then click on Academic Record again
  • When it opens, make sure to save it on your computer. It should automatically save as a PDF.

Now, you need to upload it to myCareer:

  1. Log in to myCareer: https://mycareer.dal.ca/login/student.htm
  2. Click on the Management Career Services option from the main menu if you’re applying for Co-op or Internship jobs. Students looking for recent grad jobs, summer employment, part-time, full-time (non co-op), casual, or volunteer opportunities can click on the Career Services option.
  3. Under the Management Career Services section, click on the Work Term Documents icon. Under the Career Services section, click on the Documents menu option.
  4. Click the blue Upload Document button.
  5. Name the file, identify the type of document as Transcript, click Choose File, select your transcript, and click Upload Document.

Your transcript should now be visible in your list of documents and can be added to application packages as needed.

Booking an interview time slot in myCareer

Quick Steps:

  1. Log in to myCareer > Interviews tab > View upcoming and past interviews
  2. Click on blue View button in Unscheduled row > Click on blue View button next to job interview request
  3. Review interview details > Click blue Book My Interview Appointment button > Select preferred timeslot > Enter additional information as required

If you receive an urgent interview request email from HireBusiness@Dal.ca notifying you that you have been selected for an interview, you are expected to log in to myCareer IMMEDIATELY (by the end of the day upon receiving the offer) to book an interview time.

Follow the steps below to book your interview time slot:

  1. Log in to myCareer: https://mycareer.dal.ca/login/student.htm
  2. From the main Dashboard, click on the Interviews tab.
  3. Use the drop-down list to view Today / Upcoming (or to past interviews)
  4. Click the blue View button in the row marked, “Unscheduled Interviews”.
  5. In the results screen, you may have more than one job interview request listed. Click the blue View button next to each interview request, to see the full details.
  6. The next two screens will contain important interview details as well as the available interview times:
    a) Once you have reviewed the details, click the blue Book My Interview Appointment button.
    b) From the schedule provided, select one of the available timeslots and click the blue Book (If the timeslot is already booked by another student, it will be noted as “Reserved”.)
  7. You may be prompted to provide additional information, for example, if it is a phone interview, you may be asked to type in your phone number.

Your interview booking will be confirmed on the following screen where you will also see the options to reschedule the timeslot or decline this interview. If you simply chose the wrong timeslot, please click Reschedule Interview, rather than Decline.

If you need to refer to the interview details again later, go to the Interviews tab on your Dashboard and click on the blue View button next to your Booked Interviews. You can then view the details of any of your interview bookings by clicking the blue View button next to the applicable booking line.

Once all timeslot bookings are complete, MCS staff will finalize the schedule of interviews with the employer. If you need to cancel or reschedule your booking after the interview schedule is finalized, please contact hirebusiness@dal.ca directly.

Understanding the myCareer main menu: Management Career Services vs. Career Services

When you log in to myCareer, the main menu (left-hand side of the screen if viewing from a laptop/desktop computer) presents you with these menu options:

Dashboard – This is where your dashboard of popular myCareer functions and account information is located.

Contact Us – This is where you will find the contact information for Dalhousie’s Career and Co-op Offices.

Events Calendar – This is where students can view & register for a wide variety of interactive career development sessions.

Top Co-op Employer – This is where students are able to nominate their co-op employer for a Dalhousie Top Co-op Employer Award.

Career Services – This is the section where students and alumni can look for non co-op jobs including: full-time, part-time, summer, casual, and recent grad job postings or volunteer opportunities.

Management Career Services – This is where current BMgmt, BComm, or CRMBA students can access a variety of services, features, and information, according to their program-specific service agreement with the MCS office. Those services may include career appointments, access to work term-specific job postings, access to exclusive workshops and event registration, and more.

Co-Curricular Record – This is where you can create, view, print or add to a record of any validated extra-curricular activities you participate in at Dalhousie.

DALConnects – A points-based Dalhousie leadership program that enables students to work toward adding DalConnects to their Co-Curricular Record by participating in designated workshops, events, and activities that help them build leadership-related skills and experience.

Logout – This should be obvious, but for those of you who missed your coffee this morning, this is where you can go to logout of the myCareer website.

Many students confuse the Career Services Tab with the Management Career Services Tab.  Allow this basic diagram to illustrate the primary differences:

View and Register for Events in myCareer

Quick Steps:

  1. Log in to myCareer > Events Calendar
  2. Click on specific event to see details
  3. To register, click on blue Register for this Event button > Attend event

Extending your education outside the classroom, MCS offers students a variety of interactive career development events and activities, including:

  • Workshops
  • Employer Information and Recruiting Sessions
  • Corporate Tours
  • Networking Events

The various career development events and activities available to students are centrally listed in the myCareer events calendar. This calendar is updated frequently with new opportunities.

Students can view event details (such as the date, time, and event description) as well as register for events by clicking on the event title in the calendar.

Choosing to participate in career development opportunities will increase your knowledge of the job market, develop your employable skills and expand your network. Engaged students have proven to be successful in securing promising employment opportunities.

To view and register for events follow these steps:

  1. Log in to myCareer: https://mycareer.dal.ca/login/student.htm
  1. Under Dashboard in the main menu (left-hand side of the screen if viewing from a laptop/desktop computer), click on Events Calendar OR click on the blue circle icon in the bottom right corner and select Register for an Event then select myCareer Events Calendar in the pop-up box.
  1. To view the details of a specific event, click on the event’s title in the calendar
  1. If you wish to register for the event click the blue Register for this Event button
  1. If after registering you find you are not able to attend, we ask that you return to the screen showing the event details and click on cancel registration.  This will release your spot so that other students interested in attending can go.

You will receive an event registration reminder the day prior to the event.

Using the Resources Tab in myCareer

The Resources pages in the Management Career Services section of myCareer are where students can access:

  • myCareer Student User Guide: contains tutorials on how to use myCareer.
  • Industry Fact Sheets: each fact sheet contains useful information about the nature of a specific industry, industry-specific skills and recruitment habits, job search tips.
  • Program-specific Form Information: including links on how to complete self-developed job approval forms, and Work Term Student Acceptance Agreement forms.
  • Informational Handouts: including program fact sheets containing work-term requirements that can be shared with prospective employers.

Here’s how to access the Resources pages in myCareer:

  1. Log in to myCareer: https://mycareer.dal.ca/login/student.htm
  2. Click Management Career Services option in the main menu
  3. Now, select the Resources icon

View and upload your documents in myCareer

Quick Steps:

  1. Log in to myCareer > Management Career Services (co-op) or Career Services (summer/grad jobs) > My Documents
  2. Upload Document > Enter name and Select document type > Choose File > Upload Document – Green confirmation box will appear if upload was successful

The myCareer site allows you to upload, preview, or retrieve your documents at any time, even before you are released to look at co-op and internship jobs.

It is important to remember that myCareer is not intended as a long-term file storage solution. Be sure to save copies of all your application documents to your own personal computer drive or web-based file storage account.

Follow these instructions to upload and view your documents in myCareer:

  1. Log in to myCareer: https://mycareer.dal.ca/login/student.htm
  1. For Co-op and Internship students, click on Management Career Services in the main menu (left-hand side of the screen if viewing from a laptop/desktop computer). Students looking for summer and graduate opportunities can look under Career Services.
  1. Click on My Documents option from the main menu or the Work Term Documents icon.
  1. Click the blue “Upload Document” button at the top of the screen.
  1. Select the type of document
  • Enter Document Name and select Document Type
  • Click Choose File, choose your document on your computer, and click Open. Students can only upload PDF copies into the myCareer system.
  1. Click on Upload Document
  1. You should then notice a green box appear on screen indicating that your document has been uploaded successfully, and you will be returned to the My Documents screen.
  1. From the Documents screen, you can view documents like your cover letter, profile, resume, transcript, or application packages by clicking the View button beside the document type you are interested in. After clicking View, a list will display all of the documents of that type that have been uploaded to your account to date. You are able to view each document by clicking on the Quick Preview button beside it or click on the Download PDF button to access a copy of it.

Job Application Document Tips:

The quality of your job application documents and application packages will determine whether you are screened in or out for the next stage of the hiring process. How do employers shortlist applications? Firstly, they omit applications with obvious errors, such as:

  • Incomplete applications / missing documents
  • Referencing the wrong contact person or company
  • Misspelling the contact person’s name or company
  • Spelling and grammar errors

These simple mistakes are frequent among students who apply to positions at the last minute, don’t proofread their work, and /or continue to reuse the same application for each job posting.

To ensure you present yourself as the best candidate for the job, be sure to tailor your documents (resume and cover letter) and application packages to each job posting and make time to review each document carefully before submitting your application to an employer. Be sure to remove any blank pages from your documents before creating your PDFs!

Navigating the myCareer Dashboard

Log in to myCareer: https://mycareer.dal.ca/login/student.htm

Upon entering myCareer, you will see the main menu (left-hand side of the screen if viewing from a laptop/desktop computer); the two menu options that most students find confusing are Career Services and Management Career Services.

As a Dalhousie student, you have access to the career services and resources provided by the Bissett Student Success Centre (located in the Student Union Building on the Studley campus) which can be found under the Career Services tab. This includes job postings for part-time, full-time, summer, casual, and volunteer positions, among other non-co-op opportunities.

BComm, BMgmt, and CRMBA students will have access to the exclusive and industry-specific services and resources provided by Management Career Services. This includes Co-op/Internship job postings, registration for exclusive career events and employer information sessions, as well as the ability to book a 30-minute meeting with a Career & Recruitment Specialist.  Students should be in the habit of logging into myCareer often to see new opportunities as they become available.

In the main part of the screen you’ll see a blue circle icon in the bottom right corner; click to action the following options: Search Postings, Book an Appointment, Register for an Event, and Submit A Form. Underneath your name on the main screen, there are multiple tabs that feature popular menu services offered through myCareer, which include:

  • Dashboard
  • Co-op
  • Co-Curricular Record
  • Documents
  • Interviews
  • Appointments
  • Event Registration

The default view when you log in is the Dashboard tab. Within the Dashboard tab, you can toggle between the Overview, My Account, My Forms, and My Calendar buttons.  The Overview button displays your upcoming schedule, featured job postings (Co-op and Non Co-op), and any upcoming events or workshops. The My Account tab displays pertinent information to the account user and allows you to make edits to certain fields. Please note that the My Forms button does not currently host information for Faculty of Management student users. The My Calendar button allows you to view the events you have registered for, appointments you have booked, or job interviews you have scheduled. The default calendar view will not display the content until you click on the gray Toggle Filters button and select which items you wish to view.

Co-op

Click on the Co-op tab to view details regarding your Co-op Record and Co-op Sequence.

Co-Curricular Record

The Co-Curricular Record recognizes your extra-curricular activities and experiences outside the classroom.  The Co-Curricular Catalogue is a searchable database of opportunities and can also be accessed under the CCR tab on the left navigation bar.   If you have created a Co-Curricular Record (CCR), click on this tab to view the activities that have been posted to your CCR. To print your CCR, or add a new position to your record, click on Co-Curricular Record in the main menu.

Documents

The Documents tab allows you to view any files you have uploaded to myCareer, such as cover letters, resumes, and application packages. When viewing your documents, myCareer gives you the option to toggle between Bissett Student Success Centre Documents and Management Career Services Documents at the top of the box. Note: It is important to remember that myCareer is not intended as a long-term file storage solution. Be sure to save copies of all your application documents to your own personal computer drive or web-based file storage account.

Interviews

This area will detail interviews you have been selected for that are unscheduled, and interviews that have been booked, with respect to current or past applications. The default setting is “Today / Upcoming” but this can easily be changed by selecting another option from the drop-down list.

When employers want to use myCareer as a resource to schedule interviews with prospective Co-op students, you will be notified by email to log in to the myCareer site and confirm a timeslot for your upcoming interview.

Appointments

During a 30-minute, one-on-one appointment, an MCS Career and Recruitment Specialist will provide industry-specific expert advice to meet your individual needs. We provide appointments for:

  • Work term sequence and eligibility
  • Your job search and networking strategy (including working abroad)
  • Interview preparation and practice
  • Resume review and revision
  • Co-op work permit for international students who wish to work in Canada

Under the Appointments tab, students can view any upcoming or past appointments that have already been booked or cancelled.

Event Registration

If you have registered for one of our upcoming events, (such as a workshop, information session or recruiting event) the time and place of the event will be listed in this section. To retrieve a detailed description (date, time, location) of the event you have registered for, or to cancel your registration, simply click on the blue “View” button to the left of the event and open the event details in the current or a new window.

Applying for jobs in myCareer

Quick Steps:

  1. Under relevant job posting section, click on black APPLY button for job of interest
  2. Apply with existing package or create new one
  3. Once complete, confirmation screen will indicate application has been received.

Once you have found a job you are interested in, follow these steps to submit your application:

  1. Read through the entire job posting carefully, paying close attention to the Application Procedure and Application Documents requested in the Application Information section.
  1. If the Application procedure is listed as “Through myCareer” click on either the black APPLY button at the top of the job posting screen, OR click on the blue circle icon in the bottom right-side of the screen and select APPLY.
  1. You now have two options:

A. apply with an existing application package that has already been created in myCareer OR

B. create a new customized application package by uploading the required documents, naming the application package, and selecting the documents to include in this package. Please see the tutorial How to Create an Application Package for more details on how to do this. 

To keep track of your various applications, we recommend naming any new packages you create with the specific job ID number and title of the posting.

Once you apply you will be taken to a screen that indicates your online application has been submitted. Please be aware that employers can view the time and date that applications have been submitted, and no applications will be accepted after the position’s application deadline, as stated in the posting. However, you do also have the option of cancelling your application once it has been submitted (and re-applying with another if desired), as long as this action is taken before the application deadline.

  1. You can view your co-op or internship application history by clicking on Management Career Services in the main menu and clicking on the Work Term Application Record icon, or by clicking on the Applications option under the Management Career Services menu.

Occasionally, when you’re applying for Co-op and Internship jobs through myCareer, the job description specifies that you must apply for the job directly on the employer’s website as well as upload an application on the myCareer System.

Why do you have to do both?

This application procedure must be followed because employers often use the myCareer system to set up interview slots and contact chosen students. If Management Career Services has no record of your application, then when an employer sets up interviews in the myCareer system they would be unable to request an interview with you. Therefore, be sure to apply as directed to avoid the loss of an interview.

Finding Volunteer Opportunities in myCareer

Quick Steps:

  1. Log in to myCareer > Click Blue Circle icon (bottom right) > Search Postings
  2. Select Full/ Part Time, Volunteer in the pop up box > select Volunteer in the quick search list

Volunteer opportunities (of all commitment levels) are frequently advertised on myCareer. Follow these easy steps to find the available volunteer positions:

  1. Log in to myCareer: https://mycareer.dal.ca/login/student.htm
  2. Click the Blue Circle Icon in the bottom right corner and select Search Postings and click on “Full/Part time, Volunteer” in the box that appears
  3. When you search the job postings, choose Volunteer in the Position Type section, or click on the Volunteer button under the Quick Search list at the bottom of the Career Services job postings page.
  4. Click Search and VOILA! Opportunities galore!
