Intern Profiles 2015: Amy Sutherland, W.K. Kellogg Health Sciences Library

Amy Sutherland is originally from Woodstock, NB and attended St. Thomas University in Fredericton, NB, where she studied English with Honours.

Amy came to Dal because she wanted to stay within the Maritimes for grad school. She also really liked the fact that the Dal MLIS program offers courses in children and youth services.

“This summer I have been helping the library prepare for its upcoming move by creating a video (Kellogg on the Move) and weeding our collection. I’ve also been working on the reference and circulation desks, while also covering some Document Delivery shifts,” says Amy. “I’ve edited LibGuides, helped to create a Citations Managers LibGuide, and created two videos about finding health statistics and data. I have also been helping Robin Parker with a systematic review.”

After graduation, Amy hopes to work in a library, either public or academic. “I’d love to stay in the Maritimes, but ultimately I’ll go wherever my work takes me. At the end of the day, I’ll be satisfied if I can help people fulfill their information needs.” says Amy.

Dalhousie Libraries acquires online access to Oxford Arabic Dictionary

The Dalhousie Libraries have recently acquired online access to the Oxford Arabic Dictionary.

This is the most authoritative English-Arabic/ Arabic-English dictionary ever published. Based on real modern evidence and computational analysis of hundreds of millions of words in both English and Modern Standard Arabic, the dictionary boasts more than 130,000 words and phrases and 200,000 translations. It has been designed for both Arabic and English native speakers and includes up-to-date vocabulary from computing, business, the media, and the arts, across both languages.

The Oxford Arabic Dictionary can be accessed through the Novanet Online Public Catalogue and the Databases page on the Dalhousie Libraries website.

3D Printing and Scanning Pilot Project Closer to Launch

3D printing and scanning for the Dalhousie community is only a few weeks away! SIM students Michael Groenendyk and Riel Gallant have been hard at work testing this service to make it user-ready for the pilot project slated to be set up in the main Killam Learning Commons in May.

3D printing has been around for decades, but only recently has it become accessible to larger audiences thanks to hobbyists and the RepRap project. 3D scanning has also increased in popularity, gaining momentum as the technology improves and becomes more affordable. Dalhousie Libraries’ new Makerbot Replicator and NextEngine 3D scanner will offer you the opportunity to explore this revolutionary technology, and prepare us all for a future shaped by 3D printing.

Scanning 3D Artifacts

Working in the Killam Library, MLIS graduate students Michael Groenendyk and Riel Gallant have begun digitizing artifacts from the Thomas McCulloch Museum, which is located in the Biology Department at Dal and well-known for its bird collection. The process involves a NextEngine 3D scanner to capture images of the artifacts, taking preservation to a new level.

This way of seeing the world will allow people to view, interact with, and modify digital objects, and even print a 3D copy! It’s just one part of Dalhousie Libraries’ upcoming initiative to bring 3D printing and scanning to its patrons. Canadian Library Support Staff Day

The Canadian Library Association has declared October 21 2011 to be Canadian Library Support Staff Day. We’d like to recognize and celebrate the hard work and achievements of our own Dalhousie Libraries support staff, many of whom you never get to see as they work “behind the scenes,” but without whom most of our library operations would grind to a complete halt. CLA President Karen Adams says it best:

Support staff are essential to the success of Canada’s libraries. They perform invaluable service that is worthy of national recognition […] The purpose of Canadian Library Support Staff Day is to celebrate and show our appreciation for the work of library technicians, library assistants, library clerks, pages, shelvers, and all other support staff members who perform daily miracles in our public, private, school, government, academic, and corporate libraries.

Start-Up Tips for Library Users

The Dal Libraries welcome everyone to a new academic year! Here are a few tips to get you started using the library.

Your DalCard is your library card, but you have to register it with us in order to be able to borrow and renew books etc. Just fill out this online form, or come to the Circulation Desk at any of the four libraries.
