Dal Libraries on Pinterest

The Libraries have jumped on board Pinterest, the pinboard-based social photo sharing site that’s been dubbed 2012’s hottest website.

So far our most popular section features gems (like the one below) from the Killam Library’s Comments Compliments Complaints (CCC) board–Best of Board currently boasts 24 pins and 49 followers. But we also offer these theme boards:

New Libguide Highlights Health Sciences Video, Image and DVD Resources

The Kellogg Library has a growing collection of streaming video, DVD and image resources.  Our new “Media Resources in Health Sciences” Libguide presents some of the most popular items in our collection arranged by subject.  Faculty may find these resources useful to present in class or to assign as additional study.  Students may just want to view to supplement their clinical experience or as a refresher.  Check out the guide at:

SpringerImages Acquired

The Kellogg has purchased a large  images database called SpringerImages. SpringerImages is a growing collection of scientific images that spans the scientific, technical and medical fields, including high-quality clinical images from images.MD. The continually updated collection – currently over 2.8 million images – gathers photos, graphs, histograms, figures, and tables, and is available to the Dalhousie community via a searchable online database.

Springer allows users to create personal accounts so they can organize and save their images in sets.  It allows the sets to be saved to Powerpoint or PDF format.  The license allows the images to be used for “educational, personal, scientific, or research purposes, including illustration, explanation, example, comment, criticism, teaching, research or analysis in accordance with these Terms of Use.”

ImagesMD is an encyclopedia of medical and health related images, charts and tables that can serve as a powerful tool in developing patient handouts, presentations etc. There are more than 70,000 images available for you to use. It’s easy to search, has sensible, user friendly features, and is available both on and off campus. With each image, there is generally explanatory text as well. Connect now to ImagesMD

images.MD compiles over 70,000 high-quality images spanning all of internal medicine, derived from Current Medicine Group LLC’s renowned series of illustrated atlases. images.MD has over 50,000 medical images from more than 90 collections and 2,000 contributors.

As a member of Dalhousie University, you have free access to full-sized, high quality images in step with the latest developments in medicine. By filling out a simple registration form, you can also start your own image library, create PowerPoint presentations of images in your library, and order customized CD-ROMs of your favorite slides.
