File Under “Finally!”: ACLS Provider Manual

Yes indeed, we’ve been waiting for the release of the new Canadian Edition of the “Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Provider Manual” since last Summer, and after multiple delays, they finally started rolling off the presses a few days ago, and we received our first copies this afternoon.

Like the previous edition, the new ACLS manual’s text pages are accompanied by a few helpful extras – in this case, the ACLS Precourse Preparation Checklist Card, the 2-card Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Pocket Reference Card Set, and a set of adhesive page tabs to allow you to mark the sections most relevant to your specific needs.

We received 150 copies in this first shipment, and now that it’s officially in print, shouldn’t have any further trouble keeping the title in stock. Season’s Greetings from the British Medical Journal

By the time you read this, the 2011 Christmas edition of the British Medical Journal may already be out. And why should you care any more about this than previous issues? Wouldn’t you simply expect it to be another installment in the publication’s 170 year mission of engaging and informing medical practitioners?

Well, not quite.

Each year, the Christmas issue is given over to articles on a decidedly lighter bent. Past offerings have addressed such phenomena as “…the relation between coins ingested by children and the Dow Jones Industrial Average,” and “Head and neck injury risks in heavy metal: head bangers stuck between rock and a hard bass,” investigated those in the health professions by testing “Right-left discrimination among medical students” and  “…the hypothesis that, on average, male surgeons are taller and better looking than male physicians…,”and fearlessly tackled such touchy subjects as, “The case of the disappearing teaspoons: longitudinal cohort study of the displacement of teaspoons in an Australian research institute.”

(And of course, we can’t ignore the seasonal elephant in the room, so past Journal posts have also both attacked and defended Santa Claus as a public health role model.)

What will appear in this year’s edition is as yet unknown, but until it’s released, you can access a one-stop collection of the Articles of Christmas Past at the blog of  Anne T-V (“a Canadian librarian with years of experience in continuing health education”).

The Return of the RxFiles!

It’s been a while since we’ve had this popular title on our shelves. But we’re carrying it again. Now in its 8th edition, this collection of  “Objective Comparisons For Optimal Drug Therapy” originated as a service for Saskatoon family physicians in 1997, and has grown into a publication in demand across Canada.

We’ll be carrying both standard (9×11 inches) and pocket sizes of the publication. (To quote the RxFiles website, the pocket edition employs “VERY SMALL PRINT – for good, young eyes only!”) For either version, the contents and price -$75- is the same.

New Release: Medical Moulage

“Simple recipes with over 1,200 vibrant, full-color illustrations provide step-by-step directions that use readily available ingredients.”

It sounds like a description of a cookbook, and perhaps in some ways, it is – but to be clear, this is a quote from the back cover of Medical Moulage :How to Make Your Simulations Come Alive.

Medical moulage is the practice of creating anatomical molds and mock injuries – dating back at least as far back as the Renaissance, and currently used to train EMTs and other medical and military personnel. (And presumably, in a less serious mission, to make realistic special effects for theatre and film.) If you’re interested, there’s a website for the Zurich  Museum of Moulage at http://www.moulagen.ch/Typolight/index.php. (But be prepared for what you’ll be seeing – even fake wounds aren’t pretty.)
