New Guide to Researching the History of Dalhousie

It may still be years away, but here in the Archives and Special Collections, we’re busily anticipating Dalhousie’s 200th anniversary in 2018. This summer we scanned a batch of University Yearbooks and made them available online in DalSpace, our institutional repository. We’ve already processed some archival records of past university presidents (e.g., Arthur Stanley MacKenzie) and we’re currently processing a variety of faculty papers.

We’ve also created a new research guide – a Guide to the History of Dalhousie. The guide pulls together some of our existing indices and research tools and adds links and online resources from other university departments.

Over the coming months, we’ll be adding links and other resources to help you research various aspects of Dalhousie’s history and development. The guide is meant for students, external researchers, and Dalhousie faculty and staff.

IEEE Citation Style Guide Now Available

Primarily used by Electrical Engineers, the IEEE Citation Style guide produced by the Sexton Library Reference staff is now available online through the “How Do I?” section of the Libraries’ website. The guide incorporates the basics of the IEEE style, including in-text citations and creating a bibliography.

Brill Online (Trial)

Brill Online is a collection of digital resources that focuses primarily upon areas such as History, Classics, and Religious Studies, but content is not limited to these subjects. The trial provides access to the entire suite of Brill Online products, but these are also available as individual subscriptions. For the duration of the trial, which ends on March 13, 2008, access is available from on-campus locations only.

Blackwell Reference Online (Trial)

Until March 1, 2008, the Dalhousie Libraries are hosting a trial of Blackwell Reference Online, the new online reference collection from Wiley-Blackwell Publishing. Nearly 300 reference volumes are currently available in BRO, making it the largest academic reference collection of its kind available online.

Subject coverage includes Business & Economics, History, Language & Linguistics, Literature & Cultural Studies, Philosophy & Religion, Sociology & Psychology, and Classics. The interface incorporates sophisticated functionalities such as: search options and innovative classification – by subject, person, period, key topic and place; ‘quick search’ on every page allows searching of individual titles or the whole database; numerous illustrations enhance and illuminate the content.

Access during the trial period is available on campus only.
