Do you use Dalhousie Libraries’ Subject Guides for research help and ideas?

On July 1st, our Subject Guides will be going through a system and interface upgrade. During this time, there may be minor interruptions and downtime.

The helpful content on the guides will remain the same, but the guides themselves will have a different look. The pages for the Subject Guides will now be accessible via side navigation rather than top navigation.

If you visit our Subject Guides homepage at www.dal.ca.libguides.com after July 1st (or by clicking “Subject Guides” from the Libraries homepage), you’ll be able to browse through a list of all of our guides, as well as a list of many of our online databases and resources.

If you are a frequent user of our Subject Guides, we hope you enjoy the new interface. If you’ve never used the guides before, we encourage you to check them out!

 

New Subject Guide: History of Medicine at Dalhousie

Just in time for the long weekend!  We’ve been working behind the scenes on our digital collections and are pleased to announce that one of the first digital collections created at the Libraries has been revamped as a Subject Guide.

The History of Medicine at Dalhousie digital collection was created in the early 2000s to provide a compilation of links, images, and other resources for the study of the history of medicine at Dalhousie (it goes back to 1868!).

The website has been a valuable tool for historians and medical humanities researchers, so we’re thrilled that it has been restored and expanded as the History of Medicine at Dalhousie Subject Guide.

The guide can be found on the Libraries’ Subject Guides page (under Health Professions and Medicine).  We hope the guide continues to remain a useful resource for historian and researchers in the medical humanities!

New Guide to Researching the History of Dalhousie

It may still be years away, but here in the Archives and Special Collections, we’re busily anticipating Dalhousie’s 200th anniversary in 2018.  This summer we scanned a batch of University Yearbooks and made them available online in DalSpace, our institutional repository.  We’ve already processed some archival records of past university presidents (e.g., Arthur Stanley MacKenzie) and we’re currently processing a variety of faculty papers.

We’ve also created a new research guide – a Guide to the History of Dalhousie.  The guide pulls together some of our existing indices and research tools and adds links and online resources from other university departments.

Over the coming months, we’ll be adding links and other resources to help you research various aspects of Dalhousie’s history and development.   The guide is meant for students, external researchers, and Dalhousie faculty and staff.

New Guide to Archival Research

Looking for a primary source for your research paper?  Trying to find information on the history of medicine in Nova Scotia?  Or photographs of a theatre production?  Never been in an archives?  This guide’s for you!

The University Archives and Special Collections holds extensive archival materials, rare books, and other materials.  Most of our books can be found in the Library catalogue, but finding archival materials is not so easy.

To help encourage students and faculty to incorporate these invaluable primary sources into their research, Archives and Special Collections developed a Guide to Archival Research.  The guide has information on:

  • How to search for archival materials
  • How to access archival materials
  • How to handle archival materials
  • How to cite archival materials

There are even tips for first-time researchers!

Let us know what you think.  And if you’re interested in finding out more about how to use archival materials in your research, just drop by the Archives and Special Collections Reading Room on the 5th Floor of the Killam Library.
