Try Google Scholar Citations

As of November 16, Google Scholar has made their new Google Scholar Citations service available to all. Unlike its competitor Microsoft Academic Search, the Google citation tracking service requires that you register to set up your profile, a quick and simple process that apparently pays off in the quality of the search results.

Already there are lots of feedback, both positive and negative, coming in. For example, it appears that GSC may work more effectively in the sciences and social sciences than in the humanities (see Brian Kelly’s Thoughts on Google Scholar Citations for a detailed response).

Faculty, students and researchers at Dal might like to give it a try–we’ll be very interested to hear what you think, so please post your comments here!

Make RefWorks Your Friend

RefWorks is a web-based citation manager that allows you to compile, edit and format bibliographies by importing references directly from online databases or by entering them manually and inserting them into your finished paper in the citation style of your choice (eg. APA, MLA). We’re offering a series of hands-on workshops at the Killam this fall to introduce you to the basics of using RefWorks.

Location: Killam Library Room G70, Main floor

Thursday Sept. 15, noon – 1:30 p.m.
Monday Sept. 19, 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Saturday Sept. 24, 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Friday Sept. 30, 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Registration is required and limited to 12 participants. Please register indicating which session you wish to attend by emailing Carol.Richardson@dal.ca

If none of these times suit you, we may add more sessions if there is enough interest, so please send an email to Carol Richardson indicating your preferred date(s).

Ready for RefWorks 2.0?

Beginning August 5th, you’ll see a new interface for the RefWorks you know and love. The RefWorks 2.0 look is clean, more intuitive, and lets you keep your original RefWorks account along with all of your citations.

Essentially, RefWorks has just been reorganized to put more of the useful functions at the forefront. For example, new action buttons mean the dropdown menu has been shortened. But many functional improvements have also been made, like speed enhancements to your searches, no more timeouts to your account sessions, and links to the Help site from throughout RefWorks.

RefWorks 2.0 is Coming!

In August 2011, RefWorks will move to an updated interface, RefWorks 2.0. You can preview the new interface within your current account by logging in and clicking on the “RefWorks 2.0” link at the top right (login to RefMobile). You may return to the original interface by clicking “RefWorks Classic” at the top right of the screen. Don’t worry, RefWorks will support both interfaces until December 2011.

MacNairn Presents at Access Conference

Gwendolyn MacNairn, Reference Librarian at the Killam, gave a presentation at the recent Acces 2009 conference at UPEI entitled “Zotero: A Beter Way to Go.” Zotero is an open source add-on for Firefox that enables users to easily collect, manage, and cite research from all types of sources.

Important Changes to APA and MLA Citation Syles

This summer new editions were published for both APA and MLA citation styles. Both have undergone some significant format changes that you should be aware of. The Libraries have published Quick Guides to both versions of each style. Please make sure your students know which edition you expect them to follow.

APA 6th Edition

The main change is the inclusion of the DOI (digital object identifier) which is a unique persistent number assigned to any digital object[LB1] (journal article, book chapter) to provide consistent access regardless of URL changes.

  • If there is an assigned DOI, it is included even if it is a pdf
  • If there is no DOI, the URL of the journal website is given even if the article was retrieved from a database
  • Date of retrieval is no longer included unless the article is not the final version ie. a preprint
  • [Electronic version] is no longer included in the reference

  • Titles are no longer underlined, they are italicized
  • URLs are no longer included
  • A publication medium is required such as Print, Web, DVD or TV

Journal Citation Reports (Impact Factors) Online

The Dalhousie Libraries recently acquired Journal Citation Reports (JCR) Online. JCR, an ISI Web of Knowledge publication, is a comprehensive and unique resource that allows you to evaluate and compare journals using citation data drawn from over 8,400 scholarly and technical journals from more than 3,300 publishers in over 60 countries. It is the only source of citation data on journals, and includes virtually all areas of science, technology, and social sciences. JCR can show you:

  • the most frequently cited journals in a field
  • the highest impact journals in a field
  • the largest journals in a field

Citation and article counts are important indicators of how frequently current researchers are using individual journals. By tabulating and aggregating citation and article counts, JCR offers a unique perspective for journal evaluation and comparison.

JCR Online is available via the database search on the Libraries website and also in Novanet, our online catalogue.
