Red Dress Day Pin Workshop

We had a full room for our Red Dress Day pin workshop, designed and hosted by Michelle McDonald. A big thank you to Michelle and also Rachelle McKay – who attended the workshop but ended up helping those of us who needed a little extra attention. Here are a few photos from today’s event.

We’re grateful to those who joined and created with us to mark May 5 – the National Day of awareness and remembrance for the Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people (MMIWG2S), also known as Red Dress Day.

Free! Two-Part Workshop: Make a Poppy Pin

In recognition of and preparation for Remembrance Day and on November 11, Dal Libraries presents a free two-part workshop to make a poppy pin.

Instructional Support Technician Michelle McDonald, a beader from Sipekne’katik, is offering a two-part, in-person beading workshop where participants will learn how to bead their own pins.

  • Free! All materials are supplied.
  • Sign-up required: You must attend both workshops in person in the Ko’jua Okuom at the Killam Memorial Library.
  • Beginners welcome! It is also very helpful if you have sewing or embroidery experience.
  • Tools to bring: (Suggested) Due to the bead size, it may be helpful to bring a pair of magnifying glasses.

Dal Libraries organizes five-day digital preservation management workshop

The Dalhousie Libraries is pleased to announce that it is organizing a 5-day Digital Preservation Management (DPM) Workshop this September in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Date: Sunday, September 25, 2016 (5:00 p.m.) – Friday, September 30, 2016 (12:00 p.m.)

The workshop will be led by internationally recognized digital preservation experts: Nancy McGovern (Director of Digital Preservation at MIT Libraries) and Kari Smith (Senior Digital Archivist at MIT Institute Archives), along with guest instructors and presenters in-person and virtually. This iteration of the workshop will also feature a keynote presentation by Evelyn McLellan, President of Artefactual Systems.

The Digital Preservation Management Workshops, a series presented since 2003, incorporate community standards and exemplars of good practice to provide practical guidance for developing effective digital preservation programs. The goals of the workshop are to foster critical thinking in a technological realm and provide the means for exercising practical and responsible stewardship of digital assets in an age of technological uncertainty.

The workshop includes interactive presentations, group discussions, exercises, individual assignments, and a keynote presentation by an international expert in digital preservation. Workshop attendees explore the range of components needed to develop an effective digital preservation program. Workshop materials include action plans for organizations to complete when participants return to their institutions. Action plans result in organization-specific plans that incorporate technical, financial, organizational, and policy aspects encompassing the full life cycle of digital objects. The workshop focuses on strategies for organizations to implement now, while research and development goes forward in creating longer-term solutions that can be incorporated into the program framework.

Workshop curriculum is continually updated to reflect the latest community standards and practice. The workshop begins with the premise that you are managing digital material and therefore does not specifically cover digitization except in ensuring the quality of digitized and born digital content to be preserved.

Make RefWorks Your Friend

RefWorks is a web-based citation manager that allows you to compile, edit and format bibliographies by importing references directly from online databases or by entering them manually and inserting them into your finished paper in the citation style of your choice (eg. APA, MLA). We’re offering a series of hands-on workshops at the Killam this fall to introduce you to the basics of using RefWorks.

Location: Killam Library Room G70, Main floor

Thursday Sept. 15, noon – 1:30 p.m.
Monday Sept. 19, 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Saturday Sept. 24, 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Friday Sept. 30, 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Registration is required and limited to 12 participants. Please register indicating which session you wish to attend by emailing Carol.Richardson@dal.ca

First Encounters of the GIS Kind

First Encounters of the GIS Kind: An Introduction to the Basics of Geographic Information Systems

The GIS Centre is holding the first installment in their “Lunch-less Learn” series. What is a Lunch-less Learn, you may ask? It’s a hands-on tutorial, held around lunchtime, open to all–without the food!

This session is an introduction meant for people with little or no experience in GIS. The software we will be using is ArcGIS. This is a building block for our future Lunch-less Learn Series.

A GIS, or Geographic Information System, is “a computer system for capturing, storing, checking, integrating, manipulating, analyzing and displaying data relating to positions on earth’s surface.” In other words, it’s an easy and fun way to look at the world differently.

Back by popular demand! Beginning September 22 the GIS Centre is holding its “Lunchless Learn” hands-on tutorials to give you an idea of what exactly a GIS (Geographic Information System) is, and how it can be used (hint: almost any way you can think of!).
