Have a great long weekend!
Amy Sutherland is originally from Woodstock, NB and attended St. Thomas University in Fredericton, NB, where she studied English with Honours.
Amy came to Dal because she wanted to stay within the Maritimes for grad school. She also really liked the fact that the Dal MLIS program offers courses in children and youth services.
“This summer I have been helping the library prepare for its upcoming move by creating a video (Kellogg on the Move) and weeding our collection. I’ve also been working on the reference and circulation desks, while also covering some Document Delivery shifts,” says Amy. “I’ve edited LibGuides, helped to create a Citations Managers LibGuide, and created two videos about finding health statistics and data. I have also been helping Robin Parker with a systematic review.”
After graduation, Amy hopes to work in a library, either public or academic. “I’d love to stay in the Maritimes, but ultimately I’ll go wherever my work takes me. At the end of the day, I’ll be satisfied if I can help people fulfill their information needs.” says Amy.
Hailing from Halifax, NS (her favorite place in the world!), Leah Boulos came to Dalhousie after receiving her Bachelor of Music from Mount Allison University in 2010.
“After spending time away for school, travel, and work, I knew it was time to come home to Halifax,” says Leah. “The MLIS program at Dalhousie attracted my attention because of its unique location within the Faculty of Management.”
As a Kellogg Library intern, Leah feels fortunate to have worked on quite a variety of projects and tasks. These include reference work, a number of informational and tutorial videos, systematic review support, subject guide content creation, weeding the collection, working in circulation and document delivery, and more.
“Thanks to the wide array of training that I have received as a Kellogg intern and Dalhousie MLIS student, I feel like the world will be an open book for me after graduation. Right now my interests lie mainly in health sciences librarianship, but I can also see myself working in any form of academic or public library,” says Leah. “Above all, I intend to use my skills to help members of the public access information – a core tenet of librarianship that I value highly.”
Every summer, the Dalhousie Libraries welcome students from Dal’s Master of Library and Information Studies program for internships. Working with these bright and enthusiastic individuals is one of our favourite things about summer at the Dalhousie Libraries! Over the next week, we’ll be featuring profiles of these fantastic folks here on our blog, highlighting the great work they’re doing to make the libraries better. Keep checking back regularly!
Update: August 26 – This issue has been resolved. Thank you for your patience!
Some ProQuest databases and access to full text content are temporarily unavailable. The Libraries are working with ProQuest to restore access as quickly as possible.
Make course-related articles and book chapters available electronically to your students! The Dalhousie Libraries are offering faculty an option to have links to licensed e-content added to their reading lists and uploaded to BbLearn or Brightspace (for the Faculties of Agriculture, Management (CFAME), Architecture and Planning and Health Professions [Social Work programs] ) by one of the Dal Libraries’ staff, with copyright clearance obtained if possible.
You can do this online via the Reserve page on our website.
And that’s it! Once you’ve submitted your list, Libraries’ staff will create persistent URLs for electronic items and post the list to BbLearn or Brightspace for you.
A note of caution: Some publishers limit the number of readers who can use an ebook at the same time. This publisher-controlled limitation can make ebooks challenging to use as textbooks. Before adding one of the Libraries’ ebooks to your syllabus, check with your library liaison who can work with the Libraries’ Resources team to determine if a particular ebook will meet your needs. Not sure who your library liaison is? Check this list: http://util.library.dal.ca/Subspecialists/
We work with paper as well! We’ll seek copyright clearance for print material—articles and book chapters—through our Copyright Services Coordinator and then scan and upload the items into BbLearn or Brightspace. If we’re not able to obtain copyright clearance, the material will be placed on Reserve at the Service Point/Circulation Desk of your selected library and you will be notified of this change.
By offering this service the Libraries are hoping to build new partnerships with faculty, meet the students where they are, and provide quick and reliable access to library resources. We also hope you find it useful!
Note: Please allow at least 2 weeks for your reading lists to be processed. Lists are processed in the order in which they are received. For further information or to get started, please contact:
Updated August 31
A trial has been set up for Dynamed Plus, which will run until the end of September. Dalhousie currently subscribes to Dynamed and to ACP Smart Medicine (formerly known as ACP PIER). By the end of the year, ACP Smart Medicine will be discontinued as a stand-alone product and the content will be incorporated into Dynamed Plus.
Please check it out during the trial period and provide your feedback on any advantages a subscription to Dynamed Plus might deliver by the end of September.
Please provide feedback through this online form by the end of September.
On August 14, eTherapeutics/eCPS will switch over to RxTx, a new robust and intuitive product with a powerful search engine that gives you the drug and therapeutic information you need in fewer steps.
The switchover means you’ll see RxTx when you first login. You’ll still be able to access the older interface by clicking on the link in the bottom banner. Please note that the publisher has provided a link to a survey in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.
If you haven’t tried RxTx, we encourage you to do so before the switchover date. You can also register for the RxTx Product Overview webinar. Attend this live, interactive product tour on August 11th, 12th or 13th to familiarize yourself with the new interface.
