Did you know the Dalhousie Libraries provide digital journal publishing services to the University community by providing access to hosted online journal software? The software we use is Open Journal Systems (OJS), a collaborative, open source software project maintained by the Public Knowledge Project.
The Dal Libraries handle the initial set-up of journals, answer questions about how to use the software, and can make recommendations about how to implement the journal. The journal owners are responsible for publishing content, managing subscribers/readers, and customizing the design of the journal.

A refereed scholarly journal committed to the dissemination of knowledge derived from disciplined inquiry in the field of adult and continuing education. CJSAE is published twice yearly for the Canadian Association for the Study of Adult Education/l’Association Canadienne pour l’Étude de l’Éducation des Adultes.
Canada’s leading law and technology journal. The Canadian Journal of Law and Technology (CJLT) is an established legal journal dedicated to providing coverage of legal issues relating to law and technology from both Canadian and international perspectives. Published twice a year since 2002, CJLT is edited by Robert Currie and Steve Coughlan of Dalhousie’s Law and Technology Institute, and published by Thomson Carswell. The journal features articles, comments and book reviews on law and technology issues. The Dalhousie OJS website hosts CJLT content one year after initial publication. Current online and hard copy issues of the CJLT are available by subscription from Thomson Carswell.
Dionysius is the journal of Dalhousie University’s Department of Classics. It publishes articles on the history of ancient philosophy and theology, including Patristic theology, and their nachleben, as well as articles on Classical and later literature and history, and on Hellenic, Christian, Jewish and Islamic religion. Dionysius considers philosophy’s relation, both negative and positive, to Christian belief in both ancient and modern times. As well as philosophical articles, Dionysius will publish articles on Classical and later literature and history, and on Hellenic, Christian, Jewish and Islamic religion, especially when they have a connection to philosophical questions.
Provides an international open forum for researchers and practitioners to publish original research papers, reviews and case studies on a wide range of topics relevant to the development and use of natural resources and associated environmental issues.
The Proceedings of the Nova Scotian Institute of Science is a peer-reviewed online journal that will consider for publication original articles principally, but not exclusively, in the areas of natural and engineering sciences as well as papers emanating from studies in the health professions. Papers that develop new scientific theories based on scientific principles and/or analysis of data particular to Nova Scotia or the Atlantic Provinces are particularly encouraged.

A student-led initiative aimed at publishing graduate student work of the highest quality and significance in all areas of management. Its goals are to foster the convergence of ideas within the fields of Business Administration, Environmental Studies, Information Management, and Public Administration and to promote collegiality and encourage interdisciplinary communication and research.
The Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies is a non-profit, academic journal that publishes work from current law students and recent alumni in Canada and throughout the world. It was established in 1991 as a forum that promotes reflection and debate about contemporary legal issues. As one of the only publications of its kind in Canada, the Journal serves as a unique vehicle for law students to publish their work.
The Dalhousie Medical Journal is a student-run peer-reviewed biannual publication. Much like our medical school, we feature a mix of both science and humanities. The primary goal of the journal is to increase student participation in research and writing, while offering an interesting product for the Dalhousie medical community. In the past the journal has primarily published the work of Dalhousie medical students and residents. However, we encourage submissions from members of all allied health professions at any level of training. We are also very open to considering submissions from individuals based at institutions outside of the Dalhousie community.
First published in 1999, Pseudo-Dionysius is run by undergraduate and graduate students at Dalhousie and the University of King’s College. It offers the opportunity for university students at all levels to publish their work.
Verso: An Undergraduate Journal of Literary Criticism publishes essays from Dalhousie University English Department’s undergraduate students. It is an initiative of the Dalhousie English Society.
The YA Hotline is a bi-annual newsletter containing a large amount of information and resources for both young adults and young adult librarians, including book reviews, resource lists, bibliographies, feature articles, interviews and more.
Dalhousie is now among the supporting institutions of Open Library of the Humanities (OLH). OLH is an organization that receives funding from libraries across the globe and is dedicated to “publishing open access scholarship with no author-facing article processing charges (APCs).”
The international consortium of libraries that support OLH aims to make scholarly publishing “fairer, more accessible, and rigorously preserved for the digital future.” The OLH publishing platform supports academic journals from across the humanities disciplines, and they host their own multidisciplinary journal. Their academic articles are “subject to rigorous peer review and the scholarship they publish showcases some of the most dynamic research taking place in the humanities disciplines today – from classics, modern languages and cultures, philosophy, theology and history, to political theory, sociology, anthropology, film and new media studies, and digital humanities.”
With Dalhousie joining this growing number of libraries from around the world supporting the OLH, we are contributing to the global effort to increase open access in the humanities. As part of Open Access Week, we wanted to acknowledge the work being done by OLH and to spread awareness of their mission to “support and extend open access to scholarship in the humanities – for free, for everyone, for ever.”

The recent announcement that scholarly publishing companies Elsevier and the American Chemical Society have filed a lawsuit against ResearchGate has raised concerns among those who use academic social networking sites to share their research with colleagues and the broader public. The recent incident with ResearchGate shed some light on the issue of copyright and the sharing of scholarly material in an online environment.
Understanding how one’s research can be shared ethically and sustainably online is an important consideration for researchers when it comes to sharing their publications online. When research gets published online by academic publishers, the ownership of copyright varies according to agreements that authors enter into with publishers when they agree to have their article/book chapter/publication published. In order to legally share material online through social networking sites like ResearchGate, Academia.edu, and Dalspace, authors need to own the copyright to their publications, or the material has to be published in an openly licensed format that encourages sharing (such as Creative Commons licenses), or have permission from the copyright owner (often the publisher) to do so. Unfortunately, this is not a one-size-fits-all solution; different publishers have different policies with respect to what they allow to be shared, and how they allow it to be shared. Some publishers allow sharing outside of their publishing platform, some do not, and some allow only certain versions of articles to be shared (such as the preprint or postprint versions of an article). It is important for authors to read the fine print of their publishers’ policies, to know what sharing is permitted, and what conditions they may be required to adhere to when putting their publications online.
So, how can authors appropriately share their publications online?
The first thing is to be aware what rights you have when you publish with a journal. It may be the case that some journals, such as Open Access journals, allow you to retain copyright, or assign Creative Commons licenses that allow for more easy sharing and distribution of this works. But, even these liberal licenses may come with strings attached, and limit the type of sharing that is permitted. For example, sharing on commercial platforms, such as ResearchGate, may be permitted, or sharing on a non-profit platform institutional repository, like Dalspace, might be acceptable. The first stop should be checking the publishing agreement or policy on the publication’s website, to see if they allow sharing of their publications. If it is not clear, contacting the publisher to clarify its policy is also a good step to take, as well as checking databases such as SHERPA-RoMEO, which is a searchable database of publisher policies regarding author self-archiving.
Authors often don’t realize that copyright assignment is a negotiation, and publishers don’t require wholesale transfer of copyright in order to publish works. Many authors might be presented with long, daunting, agreements filled with legal jargon, and are anxious just to have their material published but they may not give consideration to what they may be signing away. One tool that can be used is an author addendum, which allows authors to retain certain rights when publishing, such as the rights to put the publication on their personal website or institutional repository. Alternatively, publishing in Open Access journals, which tend to have less restrictive sharing and copyright policies (and many often allow authors to retain their copyright), can be an effective way to ensure that authors are able to share their research publications more broadly.
Retaining your copyright, when it comes to publishing your research (and especially with articles), enables ethical and legal sharing of your research in new places, such as institutional repositories and personal websites. Academic Social Networking sites, such as ResearchGate and Academia.edu have their advantages but are not the same as repositories, and are likely to not meet funder Open Access requirements.
Reading the fine print and knowing what rights authors retain when publishing or what the publisher’s policy is on sharing is important to being able to share your research legally and sustainably.
The Dalhousie Libraries Copyright Office provides Dalhousie researchers with non-legal advice on matters related to retaining one’s copyright as a researcher when publishing. And the Dalhousie Libraries supports the principle of Open Access in order to promote the sharing of research and widespread form.
Yes, it can!
Have you ever tried to access an online resource, only to find that it’s unavailable? Publishers frequently have to cut Dalhousie Libraries’ access to electronic journals and databases because of suspected or actual fraudulent activity associated with weak or shared passwords. When access is cut, everyone at Dal is affected. The Resources and Academic Technology Services teams of the Dal Libraries work as quickly as possible to restore access, but even then it can take several days.
The Dalhousie Libraries sign licence agreements with many publishers — these licences are a key part of providing access to databases, journals, and ebooks. The licences include clauses that allow publishers to temporarily shut down Dalhousie’s electronic access if they suspect hacking, fraudulent downloading, or other misuses of their site. Most publishers monitor activity on their sites and when they see unusual download patterns from a Dalhousie account, they shut down access to every single Dalhousie user until we can address their concerns.
A common cause of misuse of publishers’ sites is when a NetID and password are stolen as a result of a phishing email. A phishing email tricks people into sending their credentials to a fake website posing as a trusted one. Another common cause of misuse of publishers’ sites is password sharing.
Keep your password safe. Never share it and never respond to emails requesting confidential information such as passwords. Banks, governments and Dalhousie will never ask for your password in an email.

What is a ‘Lunchless Learn’? It’s a hands-on tutorial, held around lunchtime, open to all on campus — without the food.
A GIS, or Geographic Information System, is “a computer system for capturing, storing, checking, integrating, manipulating, analyzing and displaying data relating to positions on earth’s surface.” In other words, it’s an easy and fun way to look at the world differently.
This is a series to give people a taste of what GIS is and how it can be used. To accommodate more people we are offering the same session at different times and locations. These sessions are meant to be self contained. After the Intro session – take only the topics that are of interest to you.

Craig Power is the newest member of the Dal Libraries Academic Technologies Services (ATS) team, effective June 1. We are very pleased to welcome him to Dal.
As the Library and Geographic Information Systems Developer, Craig will have a unique and busy schedule as a developer for the Libraries and geographic systems. In addition to being a member of the ATS team, he will also work with the GIS and Data Services team. Ultimately, Craig’s job is to assist the Libraries in rolling out the tools that the Libraries need to fulfill its mission, such as digital archiving tools, improvements to Brightspace and supporting the university-wide records management policy rollout. He will also write programs that will process external data and make it available to GIS systems.
He studied math and computer science with information systems electives at Saint Francis Xavier University and chose to enter the software development field out of the joy he finds in problem solving. “As the Libraries expand into areas like research data management and digital archiving, we can find that our needs exceed what the available tools provide. That’s where we leverage developers — they assess needs and bring new solutions to meet the demands at Dalhousie,” said Marc Comeau, Director of Academic Technology Services.
Previously, as the software developer for RWDI Air Incorporated (formerly Scotia Weather Services), Craig designed the Runway Weather Information System (RWIS) used at Toronto Pearson International Airport until they retired it in the winter of 2015. He has also narrated, edited and produced streaming video that still assists learning for students in pre-clinical skills courses during his time as Video Editor for Nova Scotia Community College. He has considerable experience in web development, back-end development and working with a variety of operating systems.
Craig is looking forward to taking on new tasks and challenges as the Library and Geographic Information Systems Developer and hopes to innovate and surpass expectations to create excellence within Dalhousie Libraries.
The Canadian Association of Research Libraries has elected Donna Bourne-Tyson, Dalhousie’s University Librarian, as CARL President for a two year-term, 2017–2019. “It’s a great honour to serve the research library community in Canada in this capacity,” said Donna. “Academic research libraries are at the vanguard of technology as the sharing and dissemination of information shifts to digital environments. It’s a time of rapid change and growth for libraries.”
Donna has recently commenced her second term as the University Librarian at Dalhousie and has been in the role since 2011, previously having served as the University Librarian at Mount Saint Vincent University. Currently, she oversees a team of 120 librarians and staff and ensures Dal Libraries meet the needs of the Dalhousie community through supporting initiatives such as open access, scholarly communications, research data preservation and learning communities.
As President of CARL, Donna will work collaboratively with 29 of Canada’s largest university libraries plus Library and Archives Canada and Canada’s National Science Library. CARL supports Canada’s research community by providing improved access to research services, promoting effective and sustainable scholarly communication and advocating public policies that enable broad access to scholarly information. CARL member libraries spend over $335 million annually on information resources to support learning, teaching and research and act as a foundation for Canadian-led innovation by providing access to knowledge, as well as preserving vital information required to support Canada’s research community.
As CARL’s president, Donna will be joining an impressive group of university leaders who have served in this role, including: Tom Hickerson, Vice-Provost for Libraries and Cultural Resources at the University of Calgary; Gerald Beasley, Vice-Provost and Chief Librarian at the University of Alberta, soon to become the Carl A. Kroch University Librarian for Cornell University; and most recently Martha Whitehead, Vice-Provost Libraries & Digital Planning at Queen’s University.
For the last decade, Esri Canada has provided prizes to students who use GIS within their coursework and research projects.
The competition divides $2,000 between two students — the GIS Scholarship goes to a student who demonstrates research excellence and the GIS Award goes to a student recognizing that their work shows great promise. The scholarship winner also receives software, books, and conference registration.
The 2017 winners are Caitlin Cunningham and Christopher Andrews.
Caitlin, a Masters student in the School for Resource and Environmental Studies, received the Esri Canada GIS Scholarship for her work on Enhancing Ecosystem Services Mapping Through Primary Data. Presented by Dr. Claudio Aporta, Chair of the Esri Canada Centre of Excellence.
Christopher, who is completing his Master of Science in the Faculty of Agriculture, received the GIS Award for his work regarding bumblebees and blueberry fields in Prince Edward Island. Presented by Gwen MacNairn, Coordinator of GIS and Data Services at the Dalhousie Libraries.
Esri Canada provides over $3million annually for higher education. They also support a partnership program through designated Esri Canada Centres of Excellence, of which Dalhousie is a partner.
The judges for this year were Claudio Aporta (Marine Affairs), Chris Green (Earth Sciences) and James Boxall (Dal Libraries). This year also saw the greatest number of submissions by students across all campuses. Congratulations to Caitlin and Chris, and all the other students using GIS to enrich their academic endeavours!
