Free Two-Part Workshop – Make an Orange Shirt Day Pin

In recognition of and preparation for Orange Shirt Day and the National Day of Truth & Reconciliation on September 30, Dal Libraries presents a free two-part workshop to make Orange Shirt Day pins.

Instructional Support Technician Michelle McDonald, a beader from Sipekne’katik, is offering a two-part, in-person beading workshop where participants will learn how to bead their own pin.

  • Free! All materials are supplied.
  • Sign-up required: You must commit to attending both workshops in person in the Ko’jua Okuom at the Killam Memorial Library.
  • Beginners welcome! It is also very helpful if you have sewing or embroidery experience.
  • Tools to bring: (Suggested) Due to the bead size, it may be helpful to bring a pair of magnifying glasses.

Dalhousie Libraries Research Camp

Are you a graduate student, research assistant, or teaching assistant looking to develop your research skills? Dal Libraries’ Research Camp is a comprehensive program that will take you through the research process from literature searching and writing all the way to publication. The program is open to any student, faculty, or staff member at Dalhousie, but is specifically tailored to graduate students.

Research Camp is offered as a series of online modules in Brightspace. Modules may include short video lectures and interactive exercises to help you brush up on your literature searching, writing, information management, and research skills. Some modules include recordings of live sessions that are offered every May/June as part of this program. The program is self-paced and participants can select which modules they would like to complete. By registering for this program, you will have access to all of the content until the end of March 2024.

Research Camp badges are available for module completion, and badges accumulate toward certificates. Check out the full list of available certificates.

GISciences Centre’s Lunchless Learn Series: Fall 2023

What is a Lunchless Learn? It’s a hands-on tutorial, held around lunchtime, open to all on campus – without the food!

A GIS, or Geographic Information System, is a computer system for capturing, storing, checking, integrating, manipulating, analyzing and displaying data relating to positions on earth’s surface. In other words, it’s an easy and fun way to look at the world differently.

This series will give you a taste of what GIS is and how it can be used. These sessions are meant to be self-contained. After the intro session, take only the topics that are important or of interest to you.

This year, the Lunchless Learns are being taught using two different software packages – ArcGIS Pro and QGIS. ArcGIS Pro is currently the leading commercial GIS Software that is available only using the Windows platform. QGIS is an open-source software that is available across many platforms (the demo is shown on a Windows platform).  The content of both sessions is the same, only the software is different.

In order to run the ArcGIS Pro sessions, you will need to use either a Dalhousie Windows machine (in the library or lab), have the software downloaded on your own machine, or run it on VLab (ArcGIS). If you are not familiar with VLab, please read about it prior to the start of the session.

To run the sessions in QGIS, you must have QGIS loaded on the machine you’ll be working on – download the QGIS software.

Please register for each session you are interested in. In advance of the session, you will receive an email containing data that you will need to use during the session.

Killam Library Opening at 12:30 p.m., Friday, September 1

Facilities must replace the sewer lines in the Killam building. This work is scheduled to start at 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 31, and crews will work overnight to finish by 12:00 p.m. on Friday, September 1. Water will be shut down and the Killam Library must be closed during this 15-hour period.

The Killam Library will open at 12:30 p.m. Friday, September 1. 

 

Please note: The Archives & Special Collections Reading Room and the GIS Center will remain closed for the day. Virtual service is available for the GIS Center by appointment from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and can be booked online.

New Agricultural eBook Collection Available

Dalhousie Libraries is excited to share that we’ve added the comprehensive Burleigh Dodds agricultural eBook collection to our resources. In it, you will find over 1,900 chapters on subjects like crops, livestock, and forestry, that focus on areas including crucial steps in the supply chain, breeding to harvest, and sustainable management practices.  

This collection is an excellent resource for undergraduate students, as well as more experienced researchers in the field of agriculture. It features an easy-to-navigate platform and the ability to read chapters online or download them to your computer, with new content chapters being added frequently. The procurement of this collection highlights agriculture-centered resources for our students, faculty, and researchers.   

A unique feature of the Burleigh Dodds eBooks collection is its organization. Rather than a limited assortment of full books, this compendium is comprised of themed chapters from a wide range of various books. Searching these chapters for the information you need is simple – a search bar on the top of each page allows you to search by keyword, title, author, ISSN, or subject. You can also do an advanced search by selecting the “search” button at the top of the page. You will then be directed to an advanced search page to sort and narrow your results based on your needs. 

You can access the collection directly or visit the Dal Libraries website and select Databases A-Z  in the Quick Links and scroll until you see Burleigh Dodds Agriculture eBook Collection.

Raddall Reading Wrap-Up: K.R. Byggdin in Conversation with Luke Hathaway

Luke Hathaway and K.R. Byggdin holding each other's booksOn Monday, August 14, a crowd gathered at the Glitter Bean Café in Halifax to celebrate Wonder World and listen to K.R. Byggdin, 2023 winner of the Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award.

The evening began with K.R. Byggdin reading a passage from their debut novel. It was followed by a conversation with poet and host Luke Hathaway about their writing process and some of the book’s themes, including belonging, humour, family dynamics, and finding queer community and elders.

K.R. Byggdin then took questions from the crowd and offered insight into their time with Dalhousie’s creative writing program, the book editing process, and what the future holds for the author. K.R.’s next steps include graduate studies in creative writing with the University of Guelph and they indicated they are already working on their next novel. We look forward to reading it.

Thank you to the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia (WFNS) for presenting this event in partnership with Dal Libraries. Each year, we partner to showcase the most recent winner of the Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award, Atlantic Canada’s largest literary prize. The award, established in 1991 by Thomas Raddall, honours the work of fiction writers in the Atlantic region and provides “the gift of time and peace of mind” so essential to the creation of new work. The award continues with ongoing support from the Raddall family and is administered by the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia.
