Esri Canada GIS Scholarships Program
Through the Esri Canada GIS Scholarships program, Esri Canada is proud to recognize students at Canadian post-secondary institutions who are involved in projects. The scholarships are provided through schools, Dalhousie being one of 50 schools across the country, that demonstrate strong, multidisciplinary GIS courses and programs. This scholarship provides recipients with great networking opportunities, funding and access to extensive GIS resources including Esri ARCGIS software, books and training to develop their GIS skills and knowledge.
Awards
The Dalhousie award will be divided into two scholarships: one for graduate students and one for undergraduate students.
Graduate
- $1500 from Esri Canada
- A perpetual license for Esri’s ArcGIS software for educational and research purposes and one year of complimentary maintenance license
- One Esri Canada instructor-led training course
- A virtual campus premium annual user license
- A one-year subscription to the Esri Developer Network (EDN)
- Registration for one of Esri Canada’s User Conferences in 2016

Expectations of the scholarship recipients
The successful candidate will be asked to submit to Esri Canada a poster demonstrating their project, lab work, or interesting research in a special setting (eg. promoting education, conservation, disaster response, urban planning, business, engineering, social science, et cetera) and its outcomes using Esri’s ArcGIS software as the focus of the work. Along with the poster, the successful candidate will be asked to provide a write up summary of his or her work in the form of a paper with maps that express or visualize the project effort. The poster and write up are due to the selection committee by the end of the school year in which the award is provided to be displayed at the local Esri User Conference.
We also expect the students to meet with an Esri Canada representative for a photo-op of receiving the award and be willing to be featured in a DalNews article on the scholarships.

Do you use Dalhousie Libraries’ Subject Guides for research help and ideas?
On July 1st, our Subject Guides will be going through a system and interface upgrade. During this time, there may be minor interruptions and downtime.
The helpful content on the guides will remain the same, but the guides themselves will have a different look. The pages for the Subject Guides will now be accessible via side navigation rather than top navigation.
If you visit our Subject Guides homepage at www.dal.ca.libguides.com after July 1st (or by clicking “Subject Guides” from the Libraries homepage), you’ll be able to browse through a list of all of our guides, as well as a list of many of our online databases and resources.
If you are a frequent user of our Subject Guides, we hope you enjoy the new interface. If you’ve never used the guides before, we encourage you to check them out!

Food for Fines is back!
This year, Food for Fines will run from February 9–March 1. That’s three full weeks to bring in food donations while reducing or clearing your library fines.
For every non-perishable food item donated, participating Novanet libraries* will reduce your library fine by $2, to a maximum of $50. All food donations will be given to the Dalhousie Student Union Food Bank, Feed Nova Scotia, and the Colchester Food Bank (for items collected at the MacRae Library on the Agricultural Campus).
Bring your donations of canned goods or other non-perishable foods to the front desk at any of the Dalhousie Libraries during open hours. We accept cash as well, and you can make contributions even if you don’t owe book fines. By donating to the Food for Fines campaign we will waive overdue fines, but not charges for lost items.
Last year, the Dalhousie Libraries waived $1,296.96 in fines, collected 786 food items and raised $373 in cash donations.
*Food for Fines is an initiative of the libraries at Dalhousie University, Mount St. Vincent University, University of King’s College, Cape Breton University, Atlantic School of Theology, St. Francis Xavier University, Saint Mary’s University, I’Université Sainte Anne, NSCAD University, and the Nova Scotia Community Colleges

New Database Subscription: Scopus
The Dalhousie Libraries now subscribe to Scopus, a large abstract and citation database of journals, books, and conference proceedings with strong Science, Technology, Engineering, and Medical content. Humanities and Social Science content is also indexed in Scopus. Faculty members and students in the Faculty of Agriculture will be familiar with this database from before the merger. Halifax-based university community members may have used Scopus during a 2011-2012 trial.
Scopus offers a wide range of search, discover, and analytics tools. In particular, Scopus provides tools to assist researchers in tracking various impact factors. If you’d like to get started using Scopus, a short video overview of the main functions is available.
Scopus is available on and off campus if you have a valid Dalhousie Net Id and password.
