Applied Life Sciences EBooks Trial

The Libraries have been provided with a 30-day free ebook trial from CAB (Commonwealth Agricultural Bureaux). Subjects include organic agriculture, veterinary science and plant science, soil biology, climate change and sustainable forestry. To quickly view a book’s content, you can download one chapter at a time.

Access is available on campus until March 31, 2011.

American Archival Periodicals and Monographs

We’re offering you access to two archival collections from EBSCO, on a trial basis until mid-April. Check them out and let us know what you think!

  • American Antiquarian Society Historical Periodicals Collection

EBSCO has partnered with the American Antiquarian Society (AAS) to provide digital access to a comprehensive collection of American periodicals published between 1691 and 1877. In total, more than 6,500 periodicals are available.


Series 1 (1691-1820)

Series 2 (1821-1837)

Series 3 (1838-1852)

  • American Theological Library Association Historical Monographs Collection

The ATLA Historical Monographs Collection consists of two Series that contain more than 29,000 titles focused on religion and theology. In its entirety, the collection contains over 10 million pages, representing a core collection for colleges and universities with programs in history, theology, religion, sociology, political science and other disciplines.

Series 1, consisting of titles from the 13th Century through 1893

Series 2, consisting of titles published from 1894 through 1923

The Dalhousie Libraries are offering you access on a trial basis to Sustainability Watch, a new EBSCO database. The trial runs until April 14, 2011.

Sustainability Watch provides information on over 200 sustainability related topics. Monitoring thousands of journals and periodicals, this product presents best practices in a variety of areas, including environmental impacts and pollution prevention initiatives, corporate citizenship, and long-term sustainable business practices.

Oxford Bibliographies Online Trial Extended

The Dal Libraries’ trial access to Oxford Bibliographies Online has been extended to January 31, 2011. Please note this resource is available on campus only.

Oxford Bibliographies Online (OBO) is an entirely new module-based research tool for the social sciences and humanities. It’s designed to help busy researchers find reliable sources of information in half the time by directing you to exactly the right chapter, book, website, archive, or data set you need.

OBO a great starting point for organizing your research plan, or for preparing a writing assignment or syllabus. The style and approach is accessible to students, but the depth of coverage makes it of great use to faculty as well. All citations are linked through to the Dal Libraries’ collection via OpenURL, full-text via DOIs, or to the web via links to OCLC, WorldCat, and Google Books, allowing you to locate quickly full-text content directly from OBO.

Trial Access to Standard & Poor’s NetAdvantage

The Libraries are now offering trial access to Standard & Poor’s NetAdvantage, a comprehensive, professional source of proprietary analysis on industry trends, corporate activities, and investments. It is a core service used at many of the leading investment firms, corporations, government agencies, and law offices. For non-business students, the service includes a Financial Education section with tools for understanding personal finance.

S & P’s NetAdvantage will provide you with:

  • web-based access to each new Industry Survey as soon as it is released
  • downloadable company data on the companies that comprise a given industry
  • survey links to key industry websites (trade associations etc.)
  • an on-line archive of Surveys from 1999 onward

The service also enables you to:

  • gather company information (search by ticker or name from the site’s homepage, or by using the “Companies” tab)
  • understand the basics of personal finance by exploring the Financial Literacy Now module under the “Financial Education” tab

Trial access ends April 2011 and is available both on and off campus. Plenty of time to explore Standard & Poor’s NetAdvantage and let us know what you think about it!

DynaMed Demonstration

An Ebsco representative will be on hand at the Kellogg Library (main floor) from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 29, 2010 to give brief demonstrations on and information about this product.

The Kellogg Library currently has a free trial of DynaMed which can be accessed by Dalhousie faculty and students.

DynaMed Trial

DynaMed is a clinical reference tool created by physicians for physicians and other health care professionals with clinically-organized summaries for more than 3,200 topics.

Until the end of December, the Kellogg Library is offering a free trial of DynaMed, an evidence-based point-of-care tool chosen by both the Canadian Medical Association and the Canadian Nurses Association for use by their members.
