Each year in November to December the Dalhousie Law Students Society and the Law Library team up to collect food and cash for FEED Nova Scotia. Students, staff, and faculty engage in a friendly competition to see who can collect the most donations. After a marathon counting event in the Library, we are pleased to announce that this year the Law School community collected 5,416 items of food, doubling last year’s efforts. Special thanks to Anne-Marie and all the library staff for their work collecting, shopping, sorting, and counting.
In the words of Gordon, LSS VP, “I am so incredibly proud of you, Weldon. We as a school were able to come together and make a huge difference for Feed NS this holiday season. I have never seen so much food piled up in the library, and I will forever be proud of the work that you put in.”

Kudos to the Dalhousie Feminist Legal Association and the generous students at the Schulich School of Law on collecting items for 25 shoeboxes, a total donation value of $1250.00! The Shoebox Project for Shelters collects and distributes gifts in the form of Shoeboxes to women who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness in communities. Each Shoebox is filled with items valued at $50 that any woman will likely enjoy, but may not splurge on for herself in difficult times. The Sir James Dunn Law Library is pleased to be a partner in the Shoebox Project as well as other fundraising events planned for this time of year. Thank you Dal Law students for your initiative and generosity.
Summer Position Available – Sir James Dunn Law Library
Full-Time Summer Information Desk Student – May 2016-August 2016
This competition is open to entering 2nd and 3rd year law students at Schulich School of Law. Ideally the candidate also will be willing to work part-time during the 2016-2017 academic year.
Work Hours: 30 hours per week Monday through Friday (daytime hours only). Approximately 19 weeks.
Duties: Staffing the Information Desk under the supervision of the Circulation Supervisor.
Qualifications: Library experience preferred but willingness to learn essential. Familiarity with the policies of the Sir James Dunn Law Library is required as is a familiarity with the Law Library organization. Cash register, reception desk, service counter, or public service experience is highly desirable. Although this is a scents free environment, the work environment in the library contains dust and book mould that will trigger allergies to such substances.
Training: Will be provided.
Start Date: May 2, 2016 (or as negotiated.)
Rate of Pay: $13.00/hour

Have you had the opportunity to check out the beautiful new sculpture in the Law Library?
Sol is a metal and stone sculpture created in 2015 by Nova Scotia sculptor and blacksmith Brad Hall, whose forge is located in Annapolis Royal, NS. More specifically, the piece is comprised of forged steel atop a sandstone base, and its dimensions are approximately 65” x 49” x 39” (165cm x 124cm x 99cm).
It is a classic example of Hall’s work, particularly in its usage of forged metal with detail attributes that conclude or connect the carefully shaped strands of steel. As the title might suggest, it was inspired to some extent by historic sun dial designs, though it is not intended to be functional as such. The steel is intentionally rusted but stable, and this lends a timeless quality to the feeling of the piece and its materials. Not at all symmetrical, it is nevertheless intuitively well balanced, and different viewpoints reveal different interrelationships of the forms and the open spaces between them.

Lawyers are not usually reputed to be generous souls, but at the Schulich School of Law the Weldon Tradition of Unselfish Public Service is regularly put into practice. Recent visitors to the Law Library would have seen a mountain of groceries in our front lobby. Between Nov. 19th and Dec. 7th law students, faculty and staff gathered Food for FEED NOVA SCOTIA. This is an annual friendly competition, organized by the Law Students’ Society, and hosted in the Sir James Dunn Law Library. The Law School Community together gathered 1,813 items of food. This on top of the Movember campaign, Adopt-a-Family and other charitable causes.
Well done Schulich Law Community! We are looking forward to next year’s rematch!
The Sir James Dunn Law Library will be open regular hours Saturday, Oct. 9 and Sunday, Oct. 10, and 9am-10:45pm on Thanksgiving Monday, October 11, 2010.
