Congrats to Said Msabaha, MA!

Said Msabaha, Evening Supervisor in the Killam Circulation Dept., has just graduated with an MA in intercultural and international communications from Royal Roads University, Victoria B.C.

Said, who hails from Tanzania and has been in Canada since 1999, used a 2-year online course to get his degree, working as part of a team with students from around the world–from Pakistan,China, England, and across Canada. They communicated via Skype and IM–quite a challenge to coordinate time differences!

Said’s paper, entitled “Tanzanian Hip-Hop and Youth: The impact of Bongo Flava on Youth in Raising Health Awareness Against the Fight on HIV/AIDS in Tanzania,” is based on the theory of using entertainment–here, specifically music–as a communication strategy for social change. Said is passionate about NGOs and says he hopes some day to be able to work through them to give something back to the people in his country.

Said’s biggest challenge was balancing this full time MA program with his work at the library–and the birth of his first child, Ibrahim, who chose last February, just as Said was in the final stages of his work, to make his appearance! He is very grateful to Sandy Dwyer and the Killam Circulation Dept. staff for their support and understanding as he navigated his way through this demanding period.

It’s Movember. Support the Moustache!

November 20, 2009 Tina Usmiani

Movember (the month formerly known as November) is an annual, month-long global celebration of the moustache, to highlight men’s health issues and specifically to raise money for prostate cancer research.

Here at the Libraries our own Geoff Brown has been growing a “mo” (Australian slang for moustache) all month to support this cause, and he’d really appreciate YOUR support (as you can see face fungus does not come naturally to this guy…). Donate online at the Movember site his wife Jennifer Gray has set up, or come to the Library Administration Office on the ground floor of the Killam, drop your donation in the box and check out the awesome Movember moustache style guide.

Geoff and all the Movember Bros thank you in advance for your generosity!

Cindy Miller To Carry the Olympic Torch

Cindy Miller, Kellogg Library Document Delivery Clerk, will be part of a team of proud Olympic torch-bearers in Nova Scotia later this month. How did it happen? Here’s her story!

“Last winter, I nominated my 83 year old Dad through RBC for a Hockey Leadership Award. This is awarded yearly to one person per province in Canada. He was selected this year as the Nova Scotia recipient in honor for all the years that he has contributed to hockey in East Hants as a volunteer. His prize was to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as an honoree. He also received $10,000 for our local minor hockey association, an autographed Team Canada Hockey Jersey and–since this year was the year that Canada hosted the Olympics–he and I and eighteen others have the honor of running with the Olympic Torch. My brother and I attended the induction in Toronto with Dad at the Hockey Hall of Fame. I was never so proud of my Dad in all my life as he so deserved this award.

Now it’s my turn for some fun! Dad and I got together and selected family to be on our team: my brothers Craig and Jeff, my wife Judy, my sons Brad and Brock and my sister-n-law Carmelle. We then selected two minor league hockey players and then 11 others in the surrounding communities that did volunteer work as well. On November 17th, we will travel to Antigonish and each of us on our team (called “Miller Time”) will walk or run 50 meters each. This is very exciting for us all. We run from the StFX Student Union Building to McDonalds. If you want to skip off work for the day, we should be on the road by 1:30 pm!”

Libraries Sustainability Team Launched

October 29, 2009 Tina Usmiani

On Friday October 23 the Dalhousie Office of Sustainability officially launched its ReThink Program with a special event in the SUB lobby. The launch included an announcement about Dal’s two brand new sustainability teams–the Dalhousie Libraries Green team, the very first one on campus (yay us!), and a team from Communications & Marketing. Our Green keeners are: Linda Bedwell, Leigh Smith, Michelle Paon and Sandy Dwyer, and they’re already actively working on a variety of sustainability initiatives for the Libraries–stay tuned.

L to R: Sandy, Sarah, Marc, Michelle, Leigh

A Jeopardy match was held as part of the ReThink launch. The Libraries Green Team was pitted against a crack group of sustainability students and Communications & Marketing. Our Greenies–Leigh, Michelle, and intrepid volunteers Marc Comeau and Sarah Stevenson, came in a close and respectable second with a score of 270. We think it’s absolutely appropriate that the students trounced us all with a total of 330 points. We’re also very excited about our Sustainability Team and look forward to supporting them as they work to make our libraries greener!
