Food and drink policy in Archives and Special Collections reading room

Just a friendly reminder for students studying at the Killam Library that the Archives and Special Collections reading room has a no food and drink policy.

Denying your coffee and snacks is our least favourite thing to do, but we need to maintain a clean environment for the archives, rare books, historical maps, and other unique materials that are accessed in the room.  Sealed water bottles and thermoses are permitted, but we suggest students finish their beverages in the atrium and come up when they’re caffeinated.

Subway Outlet Coming at Killam

Construction has begun this week on a Subway outlet in the Killam Library atrium. They’ll be demolishing some of the concrete infrastructure beginning tonight from 9pm until 7am; this will take approximately 2 weeks to complete (the noisiest work will happen only while the library is closed).

The work will also include some retrofitting of both the Library Bistro and the Second Cup to allow for changing traffic paterns. The Bistro will be reorganized tomorrow (August 24) to allow a reduced Second Cup to operate in that space. Coffee, pastries, sandwiches, and packaged salads will be available during this period, but no espresso-based or blender drinks . Next week the Second Cup will close and be retrofitted.

Reduce or clear your library fines with food!

For every non-perishable food item donated, participating Novanet libraries will reduce your library fine by $2, to a maximum of $20. All food donations will be given to Feed Nova Scotia (recommended items).

Bring your donations of canned goods or other non-perishable foods to the Circulation Desk at any of the Dalhousie Libraries during regular hours. We accept cash as well!

Good for the libraries, good for the food bank — good for you!

Join the Food Fight at Killam

The Killam Library is helping support the biggest food fight ever–Feed Nova Scotia’s “Coast-to-Coast Food Fight.”

HRM and Feed Nova Scotia have been challenged by the food banks in Regina and Victoria to see who can raise the most food in 48 hours, from 6 pm on October 14 until 6 pm on October 16. There’s a collection box in the Killam lobby by the self-checkout machine right now, waiting to be filled with non-perishable food items. Bring ’em in and let’s help make Halifax the Food Fight champ!
