Notice from the ARDC: Canadian Cancer Registry 2013 (CCR)

The 2013 Canadian Cancer Registry (CCR) is now available for use by researchers at the Atlantic Research Data Centre (ARDC). The CCR is an administrative database with the primary objective of providing a national database of information that can be used to produce standardized and comparable statistics for cancer incidence and survival data for each primary type of cancer. This information is used to assist and support health planners and decision-makers at all levels of government to: identify risk factors for cancer; plan, monitor and evaluate a broad range of cancer control programs (e.g., screening); and, conduct research in health services and economics.

The CCR is a dynamic database of all Canadian residents, alive or dead, who have been diagnosed with cancer since 1992. The CCR is a patient-based system that records the type and number (incidence) of primary cancers diagnosed for each person until death. Subsequent primary cancers occurring for patients who are already in the database are linked to their existing patient information. The advantage of this system is that longitudinal data is available for each cancer patient. The patient data is regularly linked to mortality data (death clearance) to optimize the accuracy of date, cause, and place of death fields in the CCR and to identify potential primary cancers not currently registered in the CCR. Since patients’ records remain active on the CCR until confirmation of their death, survival rates for the various forms of cancer can be calculated.

Vital Statistics Death Database (2012)

The 2012 Vital Statistics Death Database is now available for use by researchers at the Atlantic Research Data Centre (ARDC). This is an administrative survey that collects demographic and medical (cause of death) information annually from all provincial and territorial vital statistics registries on all deaths in Canada. Prior to 2010, some data were also collected on Canadian residents who die in some American states. Starting with the reference year 2010, Canadian residents who die in American states are no longer collected. The data are used to calculate basic indicators (such as counts and rates) on deaths of residents of Canada. Information from this database is also used in the calculation of statistics, such as cause-specific death rates and life expectancy.

Vital Statistics: Birth Registry (2012)

The 2012 Vital Statistics Birth Registry is now available for use by researchers at the Atlantic Research Data Centre. The Birth Registry is an administrative survey that collects demographic information annually from all provincial and territorial vital statistics registries on all live births in Canada. Starting in 2012, births to mothers residing in Canada occurring in the United States are no longer collected. The data are used to calculate basic indicators (such as counts and rates) on births of residents of Canada. Information from this database is also used in the calculation of statistics, such as age-specific fertility rates.

Labour Force Survey 2015 (LFS) now available

The Labour force survey 2015 (LFS) is now available for use by researchers working at the Atlantic Research Data Centre. LFS 2015 provides exciting new opportunities for labour research at the ARDC.

The main objective of the LFS is to divide the working-age population into three mutually exclusive classifications – employed, unemployed, and not in the labour force – and to provide descriptive and explanatory data on each of these. LFS data are used to produce the well-known unemployment rate as well as other standard labour market indicators such as the employment rate and the participation rate. The LFS also provides employment estimates by industry, occupation, public and private sector, hours worked and much more, all cross-classifiable by a variety of demographic characteristics. Estimates are produced for Canada, the provinces, the territories and a large number of sub-provincial regions. For employees, wage rates, union status, job permanency and workplace size are also produced.

For more information on LFS 2015, please consult the attached flyer. If you would like to use LFS 2015 for a research project, please e-mail ardc@dal.ca

Atlantic Research Data Centre hosting Regression Analysis with R workshop

The Atlantic Research Data Centre is pleased to offer a one-day hands-on workshop on Regression Analysis with R with guest instructor Dr. Robert Andersen. Dr. Andersen is the Dean of Social Science at the Western University, Ontario, and also cross-appointed as Professor in the Departments of Sociology, Political Science and Actuarial Science. He is a renowned  scholar who specializes in political sociology and social statistics, having offered a number of statistical workshops worldwide.

The workshop will focus on regression models, regression diagnostics for nonlinearity and outliers (including interactions), and solutions.

Time: April 29, 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m.

Location: McCain Building Room 2018/2019, Dalhousie University

Aboriginal Data Tour

The Atlantic Research Data Centre (ARDC) is hosting a free half-day information session on datasets available from Statistics Canada for undertaking research related to Aboriginal peoples, including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit populations and communities.

Friday, January 16
9 a.m.–noon
Student Union Building
Dalhousie University (6136 University Avenue) Room 307

The session will give participants an overview of the Statistics Canada data that can be used to address issues related to Aboriginal peoples’ demography, health and socio-economic conditions. This will include a presentation of the data currently available, focusing on the recently published 2012 Aboriginal People’s Survey and the 2011 National Household Survey, and will also discuss the use of soon-to-be released datasets, including linked data that hold significant potential for answering questions that were not possible using the traditional data. They also hold potential for developing new partnerships among researchers, academic institutions, government agencies, and research communities.

There is no cost to attend this information session but please register in advance through the Atlantic Research Data Centre website:
