In January, the Atlantic Research Data Centre will be offering introductory and intermediate level workshops for SAS and Stata. These workshops are a great way to learn new software, or strengthen existing skills. Workshops will be held on Saturdays in January at the McCain Arts and Social Sciences building, Room 2022.

Students, researchers, or university affiliated personnel who do not have a research grant or other sources of funding to cover the workshop fee ($150) can apply for a fee waiver using the Workshop Registration Form.

For more information, please visit the ARDC Website. Contact Monique Comeau for any questions regarding deposits or fee waivers: ardcad@dal.ca

Aboriginal Data Tour

The Atlantic Research Data Centre (ARDC) is hosting a free half-day information session on datasets available from Statistics Canada for undertaking research related to Aboriginal peoples, including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit populations and communities.

Friday, January 16
9 a.m.–noon
Student Union Building
Dalhousie University (6136 University Avenue) Room 307

The session will give participants an overview of the Statistics Canada data that can be used to address issues related to Aboriginal peoples’ demography, health and socio-economic conditions. This will include a presentation of the data currently available, focusing on the recently published 2012 Aboriginal People’s Survey and the 2011 National Household Survey, and will also discuss the use of soon-to-be released datasets, including linked data that hold significant potential for answering questions that were not possible using the traditional data. They also hold potential for developing new partnerships among researchers, academic institutions, government agencies, and research communities.

There is no cost to attend this information session but please register in advance through the Atlantic Research Data Centre website:

2012 Survey of Household Spending (SHS) now available at the Atlantic Research Data Centre

The Survey of Household Spending (SHS) primarily collects detailed information on household expenditures. It also collects information about the annual income of household members (from administrative data files), demographic characteristics of the household, certain dwelling characteristics (e.g., type, age and tenure) and certain information on household equipment (e.g., electronics and communications equipment). The survey is conducted annually in the 10 provinces and usually every other year in the territories.

The SHS combines a questionnaire with recall periods based on the type of expenditure (1, 3 or 12 months, last payment, four weeks) and a daily expenditure diary that selected households complete for two weeks following the interview. As well, data collection is continuous throughout the year.

The survey adjusts collection methods and reference periods to accommodate respondents’ ability to provide accurate information. In general, longer reference periods are used for goods and services that are more expensive or purchased infrequently or irregularly. On the contrary,
shorter reference periods are used for goods and services that are of less value or purchased frequently or at regular intervals.

SHS data are used at Statistics Canada by the System of National Accounts, in particular as input to calculate the gross domestic product (GDP). The data also helps to update the proportions (weights) of the Consumer Price Index (CPI). In addition, many federal and provincial
government departments and ministries use the data to develop social and economic policies and programs. Various groups use them to address issues directly or indirectly related to Canadians’ spending habits.
