Singers’ Alert: IPA Source

IPA Source is the web’s largest library of International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) transcriptions and literal translations of opera arias and art song texts. The goal of IPA Source is to promote the comprehension and accurate pronunciation of foreign language texts in art song and opera so singers can give each syllable the appropriate emotional content.

Extras offered on this database include diction help and MP3 recordings of songs and arias in Latin, Italian, German and French.

IPA Source is available both on and off campus, so start singing now!

Tell Me More: Online Language Learning

The Libraries are offering a 30-day trial of TELL ME MORE, an interactive language learning program.

TELL ME MORE provides 37 different types of learning activities/interactions to help you learn English, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, or German easily and effectively. The program includes reading, writing, speaking, and listening workshops for both beginners and advanced learners, and is accessible online anytime, anywhere, from any PC or Mac computer. The software includes speech recognition, videos, 3-D animations, and real-world graphics.

After logging in, select Demo Access, then create a log-in by clicking “New User”.

You will have 30 days of unlimited free access to the activities, resources and languages. Find out how much fun it is to learn a new language, on us!

Learn a New Language–On Us!

Always wanted to learn Pashto (or Mandarin? or Haitian Creole?) but just couldn’t find the time? Well here’s your chance!

The Libraries are making Mango, a web-based “language learning centre,” available to you free on a trial basis until mid-July. It offers Basic and Complete 2.0 courses in easy, interactive modules for 34 languages from Arabic to Vietnamese, as well as ESL courses for speakers in 15 different languages. Mango also includes Google’s quick translation tool. Please note this is available on the Dal campus only.
