Intern Profiles 2013: Veronika Kollbrand, Sir James Dunn Law Library

Veronika low res

This is Veronika’s second summer working as an intern at the Sir James Dunn Law Library. It’s the ideal place for Veronika, who is working on a combined degree, pursuing both her JD (Juris Doctor) and MLIS (Master of Library and Information Studies). In the winter, she works at the circulation desk at the Law Library.

Before coming to Halifax from British Columbia, Veronika enjoyed working in a public library. She also had an interest in law, so when she found Dal’s combined degree program, she knew it would be a perfect fit for her.

Veronika is spending some of her time this summer working on a metrics project that looks at publication and citation rates of law faculty across Canada. This kind of information can be used to compare Dalhousie’s law school to other schools across Canada.

“This internship has helped me with all the research and writing that I have to do as a law student,” she says. “Working at the law library has also made me more aware of the kinds of legal assistance that people need. So many of the skills I’ve learned here will make me a better lawyer, if I decide to practice law.”

Veronika hasn’t yet decided if she will practice law or work as a librarian in a firm or a university. “The combined degree program gives me many exciting options,” says Veronika.

Goodbye & Good Luck Norma!

norma

Norma Yorke is retiring after 39 years of working at Dalhousie. In 1974 she started at the Registrar’s Office, and spent time working in the Division of Community Dentistry and in the School of Recreation, Physical and Health Education before coming to work in the Killam Library. Norma has worked in the Killam for 16 years.

Her plans for retirement include expanding the home-based ornamental concrete business that she and her husband started seven years ago, Serenity Ornamental Concrete. “I enjoy the customers and the satisfaction of creating something that people enjoy,” says Norma.

“Norma has been a welcoming, friendly and helpful presence at the Killam Library’s main service point.  She has developed strong friendships with many of her colleagues and built relationships with library patrons. She will be greatly missed by many!  It has been a pleasure working with Norma and I wish her much happiness in her retirement years,”  says Sandra Dwyer, who was the Head of Circulation at the Killam for a number of years.

Best wishes Norma, and we will miss you!

Access Journals Easily from BrowZine

browzine

What is BrowZine, anyway?

BrowZine unites articles from databases into complete journals, then arranges them by subject on a library-branded newsstand. The result is a revolutionary new way to browse, read and monitor scholarly journals on various electronic devices.

The Dal Libraries have access to BrowZine on a trial basis until Nov. 30 (this has recently been extended from Sept. 30).

To access the trial from an  iPad (works best on iPad 2 or later)

•           From an iPad, download BrowZine from the App Store and install it.

•           When you open BrowZine for the first time, you will see a list of schools, select Dalhousie, then enter your Dal ID and password.

•           Select the subject areas and start browsing

BrowZine is also available for Android users.  It can be downloaded on a Google Nexus, Samsung Galaxy or Kindle Fire HD tablet (Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean OS recommended) from the Google Play or Amazon/Kindle stores.  Same approach as listed above for access on those devices.

If you have previously downloaded BrowZine and have been using their Open Access library, you will first need to log out of that library.  To do so, open BrowZine and tap the Settings button at the bottom; in the Settings page, tap the Logout button in the upper right.  The list of libraries will appear, please follow the above steps.

Unfortunately, not all e-journals Dalhousie has access to are available via BrowZine. This is a list of supported publishers.

BrowZine will be adding JSTOR content later this month, and on October 1 EBSCO, ProQuest, and OVID content will be available as well. We welcome your feedback about this product, please comment below.
