Killam Library to Host Zuppa Theatre Production

This May, the Killam Library will be hosting a very special production by Zuppa Theatre Co. called The Archive of Missing Things. It promises to be a theatrical production unlike any you’ve ever experienced.

Zuppa describes the production as, “An online scavenger hunt in the middle of an immersive, undercover performance that happens in libraries.” Imagine it: You’re at  a table in a library with a wireless headset and an iPad, you get to be a sleuth in an online mystery. You choose your own path, and clues are everywhere – in the library all around you and in the live conversations you overhear in your headset. You have exactly 90 minutes to solve the puzzle. Can you do it? The Archive of Missing Things was created with Trillium-Award-winning writer Kate Cayley, award-winning sound designer Brian Riley, and computer programmer Ned Zimmerman. It is a theatrical scavenger hunt through the big ideas and little tragedies of the past.

The inaugural run of this innovative production will run May 15–27, as part of the Stages Theatre Festival. They have already been invited to perform this at other festivals such as the International Agatha Christie Festival in Torquay, England in the fall of 2017.

Dal Libraries Research Bootcamp

For the third year, the Dalhousie Libraries is offering Research Bootcamp, a suite of sessions designed for teaching and research assistants and graduate students. Learn effective and efficient information management techniques and literature search skills to support research endeavours.

Sessions will run from May 15–June 13 and will cover: library basics; literature reviews (searching and writing); citation tools; writing abstracts & grant proposals; copyright, open access & academic publishing; legal resources; engineering resources; PubMed and other health sciences databases; humanities resources; Canadian data and stats; grey literature; research data management; Excel; data visualization; conference posters. Faculty can recommend the workshops to their RAs/TAs or register on their behalf. Participants can attend most sessions in-person in Halifax (various Halifax Campus locations) or via video conferencing at the Agricultural Campus or DMNB.

The Hermit of Africville: Author reading & panel discussion in Truro

Join author Jon Tattrie; activist and Truro native Lynn Jones; and Truro resident Tawnya Barrington for a reading and panel discussion about this year’s Dal Reads selection, The Hermit of Africville. Published in 2010, The Hermit of Africville is the story of Eddie Carvery and his struggle for justice.

This event will also feature a solo a capella performance by Truro native, Ashton Jacklyn.

This event is presented by Dal Reads, the unity reading program of Dalhousie. Dal Reads is designed to encourage people in the Dalhousie community to share their love of books. Esri Canada GIS Scholarship and GIS Award

Three award opportunities from Esri: GIS Scholarship, GIS Award, and the International Young Scholars Award. Read on to learn how to apply:

  1. ESRI CANADA GIS SCHOLARSHIP GUIDELINES

This scholarship is for a high-achieving Dal student that is using GIS technology for research purposes. The scholarship package will help support a currently enrolled student to continue his or her studies in GIS and consider it as a post-graduation career option. 

Scholarship package includes:
1) A one-time payment of $1,000
2) A perpetual license of Esri’s ArcGIS software, for education and research use:
• ArcGIS for Desktop Advanced
• ArcGIS for Desktop Extensions, including: ArcGIS Spatial Analyst, ArcGIS 3D Analyst, ArcGIS Geostatistical Analyst, ArcGIS Network Analyst, and ArcGIS Publisher
    • One-year ArcGIS Online Organization Plan (includes 100 service credits and 1 named user)
• One year of complimentary maintenance (which provides software updates, technical support and unlimited access to e-learning courses through the Esri Training site)

Reading with R.W. Gray

RW GrayR.W. Gray’s poetry and prose have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies. He has published two books of short stories and he is an award-winning filmmaker and screenwriter with over ten short films produced. He is also a professor of film and screenwriting in the English Department at the University of New Brunswick.

All are welcome to attend as Dr. Gray reads from his Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award-winning collection of stories, Entropic.

Intro to Arduino – add lights, motion, automation to your next project

Imagine creating a simple machine that will automatically water your plants. Maybe you want to add some lights, sound, or motion to a costume project. Artists, designers, hobbyists, and tinkerers are learning new and easy techniques to bring such projects to life.

Halifax Makerspace, in partnership with Dalhousie Libraries, want to get you started in the basics of electronics and the Arduino platform. Arduinos are a piece of technology that you can fit in the palm of your hand, connecting your project to electronics, giving it “life.” makerspace workshops

We’re hosting workshops every Thursday evening in the Killam Library (room G70) from 6:30–8. Week One covered the basics of what an Arduino is and what you can do with it. The following weeks will teach you more of what you can do with an Arduino and how it can help you with your own projects. If you miss a week, don’t worry, you can still catch up by arriving at 6 p.m. the following week for a summary of what we covered.

Registration is free but seats are limited to 15 people per class. You will need to register for each week you wish to attend. If after registering you are unable to attend please cancel (or let us know) so that someone else can take your seat. No-shows will be prevented from registering for further sessions.
