As we have talked about previously, the Dalhousie Libraries are implementing a journal subscription review in 2016/17. We are currently assessing whether we can reduce our costs by subscribing only to the journals most essential to the Dalhousie community, instead of subscribing to costly journal packages. We need your input about the value of the Taylor & Francis package, the only journal package up for renewal in the fall of 2016.
The Taylor & Francis package contains more than 2,000 titles in a broad range of disciplines including architecture, agriculture, engineering, health professions, humanities, law, management, sciences, and social sciences. Last year, 12 per cent of the titles were not used at all. More than 30 per cent of the titles have five or fewer uses per year. This package now costs twice as much as it did in 2010/11.
We are considering whether it is possible to subscribe to a smaller number of the essential Taylor & Francis journals. We need your assistance to identify which journals are the most important to you.
In addition to the survey open from July 25-Sept. 30 (see here for the list of titles), we are holding consultation sessions for faculty on each campus:
Studley Campus Taylor & Francis Consultation
Wednesday, August 24, 3-4 p.m.
Chemistry Building, Room 223
Sexton Campus Taylor & Francis Consultation
Monday, Sept. 12, 2-3 p.m.
B228 of the B Building
Carleton Campus Taylor & Francis Consultation
Tuesday, Sept. 13, 4-5 p.m.
CHEB, Room 140
Agricultural Campus Taylor & Francis Consultation
Wednesday, Sept. 14, 4-5 p.m.
Librarian’s Corner, MacRae Library
In addition to your valued input at these consultation sessions and through the survey, we will also examine the following indicators:
- usage data
- pricing data
- alternate access options, such as availability in other databases
- which Taylor & Francis journals Dalhousie researchers publish in
We will provide regular updates on our analysis of the Taylor & Francis package on the Libraries’ blog, the LibVine, and on the Collection Management page: http://libraries.dal.ca/about/collection-management.html
Please contact us at Library.Collections@dal.ca if you have questions about this Taylor & Francis Survey, Dalhousie Libraries’ collections budget, or about Dalhousie’s journal subscriptions.

I am a Dalhousie student, earning my Degree an Therapeutic Recreation, with hopes of graduating with Honours and getting a Masters. Currently, the only journal directly tired to my degree and Therapeutic Recreation is the “Therapeutic Recreation Journal”. Dal canceled this subscription. I am asking you to renew this subscription as it is the only journal for my program. BSc Recreation (Therapeutic) is a research based degree, and students need access to the most up to date, relevant research in order to succeed in their degree and research projects.

Hello Janice,
There was a gap in the subscription to this journal, but it has been reinstated. One of the staff in subscriptions just checked the resource, and for some reason it appears to not be accessible. We are working to resolve this issue as soon as possible.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
