About 45 to 60% of our body weight is water. If the output of fluids exceeds the intake of fluids, an imbalance occurs, and results in dehydration. Dehydration then can cause dry skin, fatigue and weakness, increased body temperature, muscle cramping, headaches, nausea and dry mucous membranes (mouth, nose, eyes). Low water levels put stress on the body as many metabolic reactions need those H2O molecules as a medium.
To maintain general health, adults need about 2-3 litres or 9-12 cups of fluid every day. Here are some tips to help you drink up:
- Carry a water bottle with you everywhere
- Flavour your water by infusing it with fruit, lemon or lime
- Make it a habit of drinking a cup before, during or after every meal
- Set a timer at work that reminds you to take a break for a drink of water and a short walk
