Hello everyone – I am Rachel Tanner, a new addition to the Dalhousie Food Services team and one of the Registered Dietitians on the Halifax campus!
I received my education from Mount Saint Vincent University and obtained my Bachelor of Science in Applied Human Nutrition and have been practicing as a Registered Dietitian for 2 years. My experiences in the profession have been working with Nova Scotia Health at a Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation program and the Halifax Infirmary and Northwood as a Food Service Supervisor. I also currently volunteer with Nourish Nova Scotia which is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting healthy food environments for children and youth. These experiences have shaped my practice with the mindset that all foods fit.
Something that I am passionate about is sustainability. It is important to me that everyone can live a life where they have access to food to nourish their mind and bodies. Connecting with local producers, limiting food waste, and advocating for environmentally friendly packaging are steps we can make. Food security is a large problem, and these are steps we can take to make a major impact. Therefore, I am proud to acknowledge that Dalhousie Food Services has various sustainability initiatives on campus, such as supporting and sourcing local, Fairtrade, Marine Stewardship Certified seafood, and reducing food waste. As your campus Dietitian, I am committed to pushing such sustainability initiatives to the forefront and continuing to advocate for responsible and environmentally friendly food practices on campus.
Additionally, my focus is to ensure the menus in the dining halls reflect and meet the diverse needs of our student population and communicate safe and accurate dietary labelling to ensure you can make easy and informed choices.
Aside from my work behind the scenes, you’ll see me in the dining halls interacting with students and educating you on current nutrition topics to help you navigate the food scene on campus. I am also available for one-on-one nutrition counselling to provide personalized strategies that will leave you feeling supported and empowered to meet your health and nutrition goals.
A few fun facts about me are that I love going to spin class, my favourite food is strawberries, and my favourite season is autumn.
I am excited to join the team and work towards making your dining experience positive, safe, fun, and nutritious. If you see me around campus, please don’t hesitate to come and say hi or contact me at dietitian@dal.ca or 902-494-4578 anytime – I am here to support your diverse food and nutrition needs.
Your campus Dietitian,
