After last year’s extremely successful Corporate Tours, MCS is doing it all again! With tours happening in Halifax, Toronto, and Calgary, students will have the opportunity to see a variety of notable corporate environments, network with professionals, apply their business skills and have a great time! During the tour, students are exposed to real world work places and will learn how different industries operate and function.

We asked some of the students who attended last year’s Corporate Tours what they thought the top benefits of attending were. The result? From today until Monday, Jan. 27, you’ll hear from students just like you who have experienced a tour (or two) first hand and have great insights to share. Today as part of our Corporate Tour blog series, Lauren Eddy shares her thoughts.

1. You get immediate feedback from a mock interview with corporate HRs. They will critique your interview techniques and provide advice on how to improve your answers and presentation.

2. The Importance of a Good Elevator Pitch. Once your elevator pitch is perfected, it becomes the answer to the age old question “Tell me about yourself” and you can whip it out almost anywhere.

3. The tour is helpful if you are undecided on what career path you want to follow, or want to make sure the one you chose is the right one for you.

4. The importance of staying connected with your contacts.

5. Great practice for co-op and full-time job searches. Going into the fall recruiting season, I felt that the corporate tour had prepared me for talking to new people and knowing what to do at the various networking sessions held by MCS.

The Corporate Tours are a great opportunity for students to get ahead. By going to any one of the three tours you will gain valuable networking experience, learn about different industries and how they operate and have a fun and fulfilling time with your peers. Corporate Tours

Attend the Toronto/Calgary Corporate Tour info sessions on Jan. 27th. There are two scheduled time slots to accommodate student schedules. Past participants of these events found that they were very beneficial in terms of providing information on opportunities in different organizations. Additionally, the networking and mock interviews were highlights for many participants.

Because of the popularity of the fall Halifax Corporate Tour, a winter Halifax Corporate Tour is scheduled for Mar. 7th. Check out myCareer for more details on the upcoming info sessions!

National Mentoring Program Information Session

Be sure to attend the info session for the National Mentoring Program (NMP) on Jan. 16th to learn what makes this opportunity so exciting and unique. The NMP is an innovative philanthropic model that creates beneficial partnerships between corporations and local charitable organizations, through the link of a Dalhousie Commerce or Management student. Career Prep Program

Brand new for 2014, MCS is launching the Career Prep Program to help students learn and develop effective job search strategies while promoting an active approach to their career development.

There are many benefits to participating in the Career Prep Program. Students who successfully complete the Career Prep Program requirements will receive valuable recognition through a certificate of completion and recognition on their Dalhousie Co-Curricular Record. MCS has also announced 3 other Co-Curricular Record opportunities that allow students to gain recognition for their participation: Corporate Tour participation, National Mentoring Program participation, and Interview Competition participation.

Industry Week

MCS is happy to host industry sessions during the week of Feb. 3rd that will provide information on Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Managing People and Organizations, and International Business and International Work Terms. Industry Week is growing in 2014 to include a special student-led panel event that will be a must for any early year students curious about what the work term experience is really like. 2014 “You’re Hired” Interview Competition

All students from the Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Management, and the Corporate Residency MBA program are invited to participate in the 2014 “You’re Hired” Interview Competition sponsored by Scotiabank. Thinking of applying? Gain a competitive edge by attending our prep session on Feb. 24th in the lead up to the Elevator Pitch and Mock Interview scoring that will take place on Feb. 26th. The 2014 “You’re Hired” Interview Competition finals will be held Feb. 28th and all are encouraged to come and observe. Visit the myCareer event calendar for time and location details.

As the year draws to a close, we’re reflecting on our “Top Moments of 2013” at Management Career Services and celebrating some of the most notable milestones. What were your top moments? Here are a few of ours:

President Richard Florizone

Dalhousie has a new president. Richard Florizone was officially installed the 11^th President of Dalhousie in October, 2013. The appointment as President also includes an academic appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure. We were excited when President Florizone chose Rowe School of Business, Faculty of Management for his academic appointment.

New Website

MCS launched a new website in 2013 and we’re looking forward to rolling out more great new content in 2014. Stay tuned!

National Mentoring Program

“The Dalhousie National Mentorship Program won the 2013 Canadian Association for Career Educators & Employers (CACEE) Excellence in Innovation Leadership Development Award.” For more on this, read our blog post.

Halifax Corporate Tour

The Halifax Corporate Tour was so popular this fall that it was filled within four hours after registration opened. Due to the interest of students, another stream was added. Thirty students registered for the tour which took them to eight Halifax organizations which included: Aon, Bell Aliant, Citco, Corporate Research Associates, Chronicle Herald, Eastlink, Extreme Group, and Nova Scotia Business Inc. If you missed the fall tour, don’t worry, there will be another Halifax Corporate Tour in the March 2014, with registration taking place in January. Don’t miss it!

New Management Career Services Staff

In 2013, Management Career Services added a new position and welcomed new staff members to the team.

Amy McLellan, Employer Development Coordinator

Management Career Services now has an Employer Development Coordinator based in Toronto. Amy previously held the role of Communications and Engagement Specialist at MCS. This new position allows Dalhousie to have a presence in Ontario, where Amy is working to engage Dalhousie students, alumni, and employers.

Kelly Tracey, Career and Recruitment Specialist, Finance

Kelly is a Career and Recruitment Specialist (CRS) who supports the career development of students focused on the finance sector. Her background includes roles in consulting, recruitment, and student services. Kelly is a qualified Level B Assessment Practitioner with a proven record of developing and delivering innovative strategies to maximize student potential.

Andrea Young, Communications and Engagement Specialist

As MCS’ Communications and Engagement Specialist, Andrea manages the department’s various communications tools including its website, social media accounts, newsletters, and blog. Andrea also oversees various promotional initiatives that aim to raise awareness of the MCS services and programs, enabling students, employers, and alumni to engage with one another.

Jennifer Coombs, Career and Recruitment Specialist, Marketing

Jennifer is a dedicated Career and Recruitment Specialist who supports the career development of students in the marketing sector. Jennifer previously held a position at Career and Leadership Development before coming to Management Career Services to cover Jonathan Perry’s position while he is on parental leave.

Future Faculty of Management Students

MCS was happy to welcome two unofficial junior team members in 2013.

Quinn Tracey

Quinn was born in February 2013, and is the son of Kelly Tracey, Career and Recruitment Specialist, Finance.

Beckett Perry

Beckett was born in February 2013. He is the son of Jonathan Perry, Career and Recruitment Specialist, Marketing.

Student Spotlight: Theresa Connell

Meet Theresa Connell From Saint John, New Brunswick. As a second year Commerce student, Theresa along with 28 Management and Commerce students participated in our Halifax Corporate Tour this past October. Throughout the day, Theresa visited the offices of the Chronicle Herald, Citco, Extreme Group and Bell Aliant, getting the opportunity to gain new corporate insights and the chance to network with employers from Halifax. Here is what Theresa had to say about her first Corporate Tour experience!

“My experience on the Halifax Corporate Tour actually began a few days prior to the tour. Management Career Services offered a very helpful information session during which we went over business etiquette and networking techniques. After we were informed of which companies we would visit, I researched a bit about what each organization does and prepared questions to ask the employers. Each company gave an introduction of their organization’s structure, brief history, what their purpose is, what job opportunities they were offering and allowed time for a question and answer period. Students also had the chance to hand out their business cards, make connections to follow up with on LinkedIn, and pitch themselves for future co-op positions.

I would recommend that every student, no matter what year they are in, should take part in the corporate tour. It was a great opportunity for self-discovery, to learn about specific career paths and network with many professionals.”

Students Rave about Corporate Tour Experience. Another Halifax Tour Planned for Winter 2014!

On Friday, October 25, 30 Dalhousie Faculty of Management students participated in the Halifax Corporate Tour. Originally, the tour was planned for one group of 15 students, but due to popular demand another tour was added for a second group of students. It was a great success!

The 2013 Halifax Corporate Tour was supported by eight local organizations representing various industries and business sectors. Each tour group visited four local organizations. The Dal students were able to gain inside views on career options, industry challenges, culture, and values of various companies including Aon, Bell Aliant, Chronicle Herald, Citco, Corporate Research Associates, Eastlink, Extreme Group, and Nova Scotia Business Inc.

The students were impressed with the reception they received from the organizations they visited. They enjoyed the opportunity to connect with business professionals who represented various positions within their organizations. It was a busy but very rewarding day.

“It’s really helpful. We learned many things we can’t get from class,” said Jinbo Wu, a Bachelor of Management student.

“I learned so much about job positions, corporate culture, and Halifax,” said Theresa Connell, a Bachelor of Commerce student.

Student Spotlight: Carolyn MacDonald

In 2011, third year Commerce student Carolyn MacDonald participated in the Toronto Corporate Tour. After completing her first year, Carolyn was unsure of what career she wanted to pursue. She decided to join the Discovery stream so that she could visit companies of various industries. Carolyn saw the tour as an exciting opportunity to explore her career interests.

“Being one of the only first year students on the trip, I found that it was a great introduction to networking and interviewing. I was very happy to have the hands on experience before I started my first co-op work term. The cost of flying to Toronto was definitely a worth-while investment for my future career!”

Student Spotlight: Karim Pabani

Karim Pabani is a 2^nd year Commerce student, majoring in Marketing. Upon arriving at Dalhousie Karim was eager to jumpstart his career goals. In the 1^st year of his program, Karim participated in the Toronto Corporate Tour with hopes of gaining business knowledge and contacts in a city where he planned to work. Karim knew that he wanted to pursue marketing, but had little awareness of what specific areas of marketing entailed.

“The Corporate Tour gave me an inside perspective. I learned what companies are looking for in a young professional, as well as what it takes to be successful in their business. Overall I found that there were so many advantages of participating; I improved my networking skills while expanding contacts with employers and Dal Alumni. Regardless of a student’s year, major and/or career goals; everyone has something to gain by participating in a Corporate Tour.”

Student Spotlight: Stew Paterson

“Through the Toronto Corporate Tour, I developed soft skills” says Stew Paterson. “The tour is an engaging and interactive way to network with leading business professionals and was more valuable than many classes.”

Having spent his undergraduate studies at three different universities, Stew noticed that Dalhousie focused highly on “intangibles”; activities outside of the classroom. Stew believes “the most important intangible is my network of connections”. During his time at Dal, Stew was highly involved in networking activities. As a former President of the Finance Society, Stew made connections he never thought possible. Stew says that “connections made through society events will prove invaluable to any student down the road.”

As an MBA grad, Stew believes that developing a network of connections is the key to success. His clearly defined goals of what he wanted to be, where he wanted to go and how he could get there, allowed him to land a position in the TD Securities Trading Rotation Program.
