Dalhousie’s reading Lawrence Hill’s The Book of Negroes this fall and maybe some of you were lucky enough to meet the author himself on campus. But did you know that not only has Hill written two other novels—Any Known Blood and Some Great Thing—he’s also the author of a bestselling memoir (Black Berry, Sweet Juice: On Being Black and White in Canada) and several non-fiction books, most recently The Deserter’s Tale: the Story of an Ordinary Soldier Who Walked Away from the War in Iraq. All of these are either on the shelf at the Dal Libraries or available through Novanet, so check them out!

The Dal Libraries are kicking off Black History Month with a celebration of Blacks in Nova Scotia. We have a wealth of resources online and on the shelf for you to discover, so keep an eye on this site!
Canada Post has just issued a commemorative stamp featuring Nova Scotian William Hall (1829-1904), the first Black to be awarded the Victoria Cross. Our rich digital collection Historical Roots: Blacks in Nova Scotia includes the full text of a biography of Hall by Bridglal Pachai. William Hall: Winner of the Victorian Cross is filled with local history and well illustrated with photos and maps.

Did you know that we offer an online guide just for students in the Transition Year Program (TYP)? The TYP is a one-year program designed for First Nations and African Canadian adults who do not yet meet standard Dalhousie entrance requirements. The TYP core curriculum includes non-credit courses in Black and Native Studies, Study Skills, English, Mathematics and a credit course at Dalhousie. An introductory Computer course is also offered.
The TYP Libguide includes information on using the library, doing research, and getting writing assistance. It also provides links to key databases and reference works and to books, theses, ebooks, videos and DVDs in Black and First Nations Studies. Of particular interest are the “Primary Sources” links to digitized documents such as letters, diaries, interviews and early historical accounts.
