What brought you to the MLIS program at Dal? The MLIS program at Dal looked more flexible than the other schools I was considering at the time, and being part of the School of Management was a plus for me having just left a management role at my former career. Also, being closer to my family in Newfoundland and the small-town vibe of the city of Halifax were large attractions for me.
What drew you to the internship at the Dal Libraries? I was very keen to start building real experience in a library and after hearing the experiences of the second-year students working in the various Dalhousie Libraries, I set my sights on the internship at the Kellogg Health Sciences Library. Helping connect people to the right resources to allow them to improve the health of themselves and others has proven to be an extremely gratifying work experience.
Your educational background: I completed my BA in English at the University of Windsor, and during my former career in logistics I was able to attend many workshops on training, safety, and leadership. Both my academic and professional educational experiences have helped my personal growth, and I urge people to always try to learn regardless of where they find themselves in life.
What you’ve been doing during your internship: I’ve had the opportunity to work with patrons at the service points, to answer reference emails, and have sat in on reference interviews with some of the experienced librarians here at the Kellogg. I’ve assisted with literature searches, updated Libguides, created tutorial and informational videos, worked on electronic surveys for collection development, as well as collaborated on a group project with my fellow Dalhousie Libraries interns.
Fun and interesting facts about you: During my internship I’ve had the chance to set my experience in radio to good use. You may occasionally hear my monotone voice narrating videos found throughout the Library website. Also, Pokemon Go has taken over all of my free time and destroyed my data plan.
