I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to the graduands of 2011. It has been my privilege to work with you for the past few years and I thank you all for your contributions to the School, and to my own growth as a member of this profession and an educator.  I very much hope that you will keep in touch and inform of us your career developments; we very much consider you part of the SIM family.  I would like to extend my thanks also to your friends, family, and loved ones, as I know how important their support has been to you.  In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “do not follow where the path may lead.  Go, instead, where there is no path and leave a trail.”

MLIS student Melissa Goertzen will be co-presenting the following poster at the GRAND* (Graphics, Animation & New Media) Conference in Vancouver, BC. (May12-14, 2011). 

“Publish or Perish…or Blog About It: Scholarly Communication and Information Dissemination Trends in the Age of Social Media” (Melissa Goertzen  – Poster Presentation).

This poster highlights the ongoing work of Melissa and Dr. Gruzd at the Social Media Lab to study and document the usage trends of online social media (OSM) for academic purposes.

* GRAND is a federally-funded Network of Centres of Excellence (NCE) research network and commercialization engine whose goal is to address complex issues in digital media and transform multidisciplinary research into user-centred solutions.

MLIS student Nicole Dixon will be co-presenting the following paper at CLA:

Sea Stacks: Contemporary Atlantic Canadian Books for Children and Teens

This presentation addresses the lack of information on regional Atlantic authors and illustrators by describing our SSHRC-funded research project which documents and analyzes the current state of regional literature for children and young adults in Atlantic Canada, and describes the process of creating an authoritative website devoted to contemporary Atlantic Canadian literature for youth.

The Read to Me! Program is looking for weekend volunteers!

Read to Me! is a non-profit early literacy organization that gives
a free bag of books and literacy resources to every baby born or adopted
in Nova Scotia. The bag is distributed at 11 hospitals throughout the
province, at the hospital bedside within 24 hours of birth.
