The YA Hotline is a bi-annual newsletter published by the School of Information Management at Dalhousie University. The newsletter contains information and resources for both young adults and young adult librarians including book reviews, resource lists, bibliographies, feature articles, interviews and more. The editor of the newsletter is Vivian Howard, Associate Professor and Associate Dean (Academic) and the articles in each newsletter are written by SIM students/alumni.

Issue 104 explores the evolving world of FANFICTION and includes discussions of the history of fanfiction, where to find fanfiction, ideas for using fanfiction in programming, and the relationship of copyright and fanfiction. This issue was written by MLIS alumna Gabrielle Brydges, Caitlyn Carson, Laurie Chase, Alyssa Dawson, Claire Dionne, and Megan O’Brien. Student Employment Opportunity: Faculty of Management Curriculum Map Editor Needed

Rate of pay: $15/hour

Hours of work: Approx. 7-10 hours per week. This is
a flexible work assignment. Editors can usually set their own hours and work from any location. This project should be completed in 10-12 weeks.

One position is available.

Duties:
— Identifying student learning outcomes (SLOs) from graduate Faculty of Management course syllabi and assignments.
— Developing standardized vocabulary to describe SLOs consistently.
— Confirming the accuracy of SLO identification.
— Inputting the SLO data into Daedalus software.
— Editing the curriculum map to show connections between SLOs.

Training on Daedalus will be provided.

Preference will be given to incoming students with a particular interest in the organization of information (cataloguing, indexing, abstracting, metadata standards) and to those with undergraduate backgrounds in Education.

Hours: Five (5) hours per week.

Qualifications:

§ Experience in website management.

Two new issues of the YA Hotline Newsletter have just been published!

• Issue 97 (Remix Culture) was written by Alan Chorney, Megan Clark, Danielle Hubbard, Emily LeGrand, Sarah Nicholson, and Chantal de Medeiros. Remix culture refers to the practice of taking one or more pre-existing artistic works and combining or re-inventing the material into something new. Artistic works could be music, movies, books, or visual art. In today’s increasingly digital world, creating remixes and mashups is becoming more and more popular, especially in teen culture.
• Issue 98 (Hallowe’en Horror) was written by Elyse Coombs, Brenna Lozinsky, Tara Rumsey, Gabrielle Steffler, and Bailey Waite. This issue contains a variety of articles related to the ever-popular YA-horror genre, particularly relevant for the Hallowe’en season.

Call for expressions of interest: Directed reading class

This is an opportunity for a directed reading class focusing on the “One Book Nova Scotia” reading program. The reading class will consist of a research study with the following components:

1. Review of the research literature related to mass reading events;
2. Creation and analysis of an online survey of One Book Nova Scotia participants;
3. Analysis of social media posts related to One Book Nova Scotia;
4. Preparation of a report summarizing all findings;
5. Preparation of a poster summarizing the study.

This independent study project should be completed in the fall term. Interested students should read the INFO 6700 Reading Course information on the MLIS website.

qualifications, particularly your prior experience creating and analyzing online surveys.
