Another successful Associated Alumni Awards reception

I would like to thank the SIM Associated Alumni for organizing a very successful and enjoyable Awards reception last night to welcome the 2011 Alumna of the Year, Margaret Murphy, the Nova Scotia Legislative Librarian. Ms. Murphy shared valuable words of wisdom with SIM students; naturally, I was very happy when she said that all MLIS students should take cataloguing 🙂

Thanks are due, also, for the invaluable work done by the SIM administrative team of Shanna Balogh, Jenn Cox, and JoAnn Watson, without whom such events would be impossible.

The event is a wonderful opportunity to meet our alumni, who are always so gracious and generous in their support of SIM and our students; furthermore, it enables current students to meet their future professional colleagues.

Invitation to attend the Dalhousie SIM Associated Alumni Reception

Dear Students & Faculty,

The Dalhousie SIM Associated Alumni are pleased to invite you to the 2011 Outstanding Alumni Award Reception, on Thursday, September 22 at 6:30pm, in the Executive Training Suite (room 3089) in the Kenneth C. Rowe Management Building.

This year’s Award recipient is Margaret Murphy (MLIS ’76). Ms. Murphy has served as the Nova Scotia Legislative Librarian for 26 years. During this time she has revolutionized the Legislative Library, ushering in automation, digitization, preservation and greater access to the public. To read more about her wonderful achievements, please visit the

In addition to celebrating Margaret’s accomplishments, this is a great opportunity to connect with both current and future alumni. Refreshments will be available. Please RSVP by email at david.ryan@msvu.ca.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Sincerely,

Orientation wrap up

Orientation 2011 has proven to be a very full, productive, and rewarding week.  It was exciting to meet the new incoming students and to welcome back our returning students.  I am impressed with the level of enthusiasm and energy that I witnessed this week.

I would like to thank the SIM administrative team of Shanna Balogh, Jenn Cox, and JoAnn Watson for their help in ensuring that this week’s activities was a success. Thanks also to Dr. Bertrum MacDonald for facilitating today’s conference session and, of course, to all the participants. The SIMSA executive and the team of student volunteers provided vital assistance throughout the week.

Special thanks and gratitude are due to returning student Elinor Crosby, who was responsible for coordinating the week’s activities.  Elinor was a consummate professional throughout the entire planning process and did an excellent job of welcoming our new students.

Wishing you all a relaxing weekend,

Welcome to the new academic year

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all new and returning students in the MLIS and MIM programs. The first day of the academic term inspires many reactions, including anxiety, excitement, anticipation, and trepidation:  All are normal.  My colleagues and I at SIM are here to help in in whatever way we can:  Our goal is to help you achieve your goals and to enjoy your experience at SIM in an encouraging and welcoming environment. I wish all of you the very best and look forward to discussions inside and outside the classroom.

Conferences, Conferences, Conferences: Summer Research Activities in the School of Information Management

Work on research projects occurs year round, but during the spring and summer faculty and students are often away from the campus presenting papers and posters at conferences and giving workshops based on their research findings. The number of speaking commitments this year is notable: by the end of the summer over 45 presentations will have been given at conferences and meetings throughout Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The range of topics and venues is also noteworthy as the following paragraphs demonstrate. Moreover, the opportunities for students to speak about their research and gain experience are an important feature of the research projects and teams operating in the School.

Congratulations to the class of 2011

I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to the graduands of 2011. It has been my privilege to work with you for the past few years and I thank you all for your contributions to the School, and to my own growth as a member of this profession and an educator.  I very much hope that you will keep in touch and inform of us your career developments; we very much consider you part of the SIM family.  I would like to extend my thanks also to your friends, family, and loved ones, as I know how important their support has been to you.  In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “do not follow where the path may lead.  Go, instead, where there is no path and leave a trail.”
