Food for Fines is back!
This year, Food for Fines will run from February 9–March 1. That’s three full weeks to bring in food donations while reducing or clearing your library fines.
For every non-perishable food item donated, participating Novanet libraries* will reduce your library fine by $2, to a maximum of $50. All food donations will be given to the Dalhousie Student Union Food Bank, Feed Nova Scotia, and the Colchester Food Bank (for items collected at the MacRae Library on the Agricultural Campus).
Bring your donations of canned goods or other non-perishable foods to the front desk at any of the Dalhousie Libraries during open hours. We accept cash as well, and you can make contributions even if you don’t owe book fines. By donating to the Food for Fines campaign we will waive overdue fines, but not charges for lost items.
Last year, the Dalhousie Libraries waived $1,296.96 in fines, collected 786 food items and raised $373 in cash donations.
*Food for Fines is an initiative of the libraries at Dalhousie University, Mount St. Vincent University, University of King’s College, Cape Breton University, Atlantic School of Theology, St. Francis Xavier University, Saint Mary’s University, I’Université Sainte Anne, NSCAD University, and the Nova Scotia Community Colleges

Dalhousie Libraries – Healthy Workplace Award Nominee!
A shout out to the Dalhousie Libraries, who were nominated for a Healthy Workplace Award!
Employing over 140 librarians, administrators and support staff, the Kellogg, Killam, Law, MacRae, and Sexton libraries serve thousands of patrons each year, and are the hubs of many sources of information and resource services.
A truly healthy workplace involves the six dimensions of wellness: physical, emotional, intellectual, interpersonal/social, spiritual, and environmental. With that in mind, the Libraries’ Health & Wellness Committee developed a wide range of initiatives to support employee and workplace health and wellness.
These included:
- A 10-week yoga program
- A skating party at the Emera Oval
- A six week “Spring into Action Challenge” with all of the participants meeting the minimum requirement of 30 minutes of physical activity per day for five days each week.
- Ergonomic assessments of work spaces
- A milestone recognition program
- A “Be Well” newsletter
- Proudly participating in Pink Day and the Pride Parade
Even though employees are spread out over five different locations, the mix of individual and group programs meant that there was something for everyone to participate in.
Congratulations Dalhousie Libraries!
Congratulations, Angela!
Congratulations to Angela Hersey, who works at the W. K. Kellogg Health Sciences Library, for successfully defending her thesis and graduating with her Master of Environmental Studies (MES) degree.
Angela’s thesis examined Farm Link programs in the United States. Farm link programs are matchmaking programs that connect farmers who are ready to retire with new farmers looking for land and farming opportunities to launch their career. Her research goal was to learn if these programs work, and if not, what might impede their success. Farmer retirement, and what to do with farmland is a topical issue these days in the agricultural world. Angela is currently working on publishing the results of her research with her supervisor Dr. Michelle Adams.
Angela has some ideas for the future, but she’s not ready to announce them just yet. Convocation will be in May. Again, all the best to you Angela, from your colleagues at the Dalhousie Libraries!
