Profiling the Medical Humanities Collection at the Kellogg Health Sciences Library

MH_detailTo support research in the Medical Humanities the Kellogg Library provides its users with an eclectic selection of both the substantial works of art engendered by the practice of Medicine and lived experiences of health and wellness as well as the results of current research in the Medical Humanities.

Congratulations to Charles Kalinsky (BScN student) who won the Grand Prize of a Kindle Fire for filling in the Kellogg Library Services Survey.

Thanks to Charles and 70 others who took the time to complete our survey.  The feedback will be a great help as we plan our new library space coming January 2016. Our thanks to Elsevier for their generous donation of the Kindle Fire.

3D Printing now available at the Kellogg Library

The Kellogg Library now provides 3D printing services for our users. Producing replicas, models, and everyday objects has never been easier, more affordable ($1.00/hour), or more accessible as it is with in-house 3D printing technology.

Using a MakerBot Replicator 3D printer, we can easily take a file and turn it into a physical object you can hold in your hand. Many objects have already been designed and can be found in 3D printing object libraries online, like Thingiverse (www.thingiverse.com), but you can make your own by using free programs like SketchUp (www.sketchup.com). 3D printing display

Kellogg Health Sciences Library: A Space Odyssey!

Big changes are coming to the Kellogg Health Sciences Library as mentioned in a posting from February 11.  A new Learning Commons space will be opening in the CHEB building (now under construction)  in January 2016.  In addition, Kellogg Library staff and collections will be “taking the show on the road” to temporary quarters (but not too far away) in December 2015, while our existing main floor is renovated. The scheduled return date is September 2016. Drop in to the Kellogg Library to have a look at the plans on display and get an idea of the shape our new space will take.

In anticipation of these changes, we’d like your feedback on services you consider essential in a new library space. Our brief survey is 10 questions and takes 5–10 minutes to complete AND you could win a Kindle Fire!  Click on the image to open our survey, and be sure to include your contact information should you be a winner.

Dal Libraries Team ‘Here There Bee Tigers’ have a great showing at Word On The Street Annual Spelling Bee

In a nail biting test of wits Team Here There Bee Tigers fought their way into the semi-finals in an epic 29 word battle with the Halifax Public Library Word Warriors (OK maybe there was one BuzzAgain second chance).  The word that won the match was URSPRACHE (any hypothetical extinct and unrecorded language reconstructed from groups of related recorded languages) thanks to speller extraordinaire Joe Wickens.

Running low on power? Drop in and charge your phone or tablet at the new Charging Station in the Kellogg Health Sciences library. Relax in one of our comfortable chair and while you wait let us know what you think of this pilot service. We hope it will be a thumbs up!

Extended opening hours at Kellogg

It’s that time of year again!  The Kellogg Library is open until 11:00 pm every night to provide a quiet place for exam study.  Extended hours will be in effect from November 15 to December 17.

Joanna Briggs Institute eBooks Series Now Available

The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) is a world leader in evidence-based healthcare. The Kellogg Health Sciences Library is pleased to provide online access to JBI’s new Synthesis Science in HealthCare series. This ebook series looks at the JBI model of evidence-based healthcare as well as individual titles on evaluation of qualitative and quantitative research, assessment of evidence from intervention and diagnostic accuracy studies, and methods to minimize risks from adverse events.  You may access the book series via the Dalhousie Library catalogue and by links on each of the titles below.

Other JBI resources like systematic reviews and evidence summaries are available as well.
