Gabrielle is from the Toronto area. She has a Bachelor of Music, a Bachelor of Education, and a Master of Music Education, all from the University of Western Ontario. Her area of concentration is voice.
Through her music degrees, Gabrielle became interested in music preservation. Her Scottish background encouraged an interest in learning Gaelic, and her passion for music encouraged an interest in learning Gaelic songs. Often, learning Gaelic songs require “kitchen-table learning,” meaning learning the songs orally from people that have known them all their lives.
One of the main reasons Gabrielle chose to come to Dalhousie for her MLIS degree was so that she could be closer to Cape Breton and the Gaelic culture. This summer, Gabrielle will spend her time working on LibGuides, in addition to providing customer service at the Killam Library Service Point. Last year, she worked with the Dal Libraries in a part-time capacity, assisting with some projects in DalSpace, particularly building faculty profiles.
“I’d love to work in something related to music, arts, or culture. I see myself in a post-secondary and academic environment, and also using my teaching degree. I’d also love to do more work preserving recordings and making the Gaelic songs available online, as well as being an advocate for open access,” said Gabrielle.
