All of our libraries have decided to open after 11 a.m. on Remembrance Day, Monday, November 11. The eleventh hour on Remembrance Day is significant because it is the time Canadians are asked to pause in memory of the thousands of men and women who sacrificed their lives in military service. There are also many Remembrance Day services happening around HRM at 11 a.m., and by delaying our opening time we hope more people will be available to attend these services.
From Today @ Dal: 11 ways to remember on November 11
Changing our hours to open after 11 a.m. was a recent decision, so please see the hours of the libraries below. Please note, no hours have been lost as a result of this change, each library is still scheduled to be open for same amount of hours, we’ve just delayed opening by an hour or two in some cases. We’ll be open later into the evening to make up for the change.
The Remembrance Day hours for the Dalhousie Libraries are as follows:
Sir James Dunn Law Library: Noon-10:45 p.m.
W. K. Kellogg Health Sciences Library: Noon-8 p.m.
Killam Memorial Library: 1-9 p.m.
MacRae Library: 1-10:30 p.m.
Sexton Design & Technology Library: 1-9 p.m.

The Saint Mary’s Patrick Power Library opens at noon on Nov. 11. The Killam Library doesn’t open until 1, even though Dal has twice the number of students. The logic that no hours are being lost only makes sense for those who plan to remain at the library into the night. The Killam should open by 12 noon at the latest, given the size of the student body. The library is closed for a couple of weeks over the Xmas holidays. Nov. 11 is not a statutory holiday and it should be up to individual choice whether or not a person plans to attend functions. Please ensure that the library does not look for any reason it can to inconvenience students at what is the busiest time of the academic term.
Marlo MacKay says
Hi Mary,
Due to budget cuts to our operating budget this year, we have had to cut some of our open hours, including a decision to be open for eight hours on holidays. Originally, we were scheduled to be open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Remembrance Day, but we changed it to 1-9 p.m. on the suggestion of a staff member who thought that students and library staff would appreciate the time as an opportunity to take in a service if they want to. So, that is what we meant by “no loss of hours.” We were scheduled to be open for eight hours, and we just moved those eight hours to a different time of the day (when the library tends to be used more, incidentally).
As for the hours over Christmas, historically, once exams are over, the number of users in the library decreases significantly until January. We adjust our hours accordingly, as it is difficult to justify staffing this large building when use is so low, but I must clarify that we are not closed for two weeks over Christmas.
This is when we will be open after exams, during the holidays:
Tuesday December 17 – Friday December 20 8 am – 6 pm
Saturday December 21 and Sunday December 22 10 am – 6 pm
Monday December 23 8 am – 6 pm
Tuesday December 24 8 am – 12 pm
Wednesday December 25 -Friday December 27 Closed
Saturday December 28 and Sunday December 29 10 am – 6 pm
Monday December 30 – Wednesday January 1 Closed
Thursday January 2 – Friday January 3 8 am – 6 pm
Saturday January 4 – Sunday January 5 10 am – 6 pm
Regular hours resume January 6.
