This spring, we started developing a new laptop study area in the Sexton Library. Designed by librarian Sarah Jane Dooley, the new laptop study space was built around the existing stack infrastructure. Metal uprights that used to support shelves were left in place, and glass, cloth, and cork panels were installed as vertical separations. Counter-top material was used for desk-tops. Sixteen electrical plugs were installed in the study space, and brightly coloured chairs and stools finish the space off. Four of the desk-tops are at stool height, and four are accessible at desk height.
This clever design was inexpensive to build and one that we can potentially apply in other areas of the Library. Thanks to the staff at the Sexton Library, particularly Debbie Weissent and Carolene Robertson for their work of physically moving the Standards collection to the basement and updating their locations in the Aleph catalogue. Thanks also to Sarah Jane Dooley for her thrifty and smart design.
