It is with great pleasure that I announce that the MLIS program has been granted continued accreditation status by the Committee on Accreditation, American Library Association. We have been granted full accreditation for seven years. I would like to extend my sincerest thanks and gratitude to all my colleagues at SIM, our wonderful students and alumni, as well as all our SIM friends for the group effort that went into the preparation and presentation of our Program Presentation.
With thanks,
Louise Spiteri
The CLA Access 2012 Conference committee has begun posting all their talks on their Youtube channel. Here’s a link for those of you interested in watching our presentation on 3D printing at Dalhousie University Libraries:
Good morning and happy New Year!
The latest issue of Inform is now available; it covers the period from July to December 2012 and can be found on the SIM website. We look forward to receiving your updates and hearing your feedback.
SIM and the Centre for Advanced Management Education (CFAME) are organizing a drive to support Phoenix House, a Halifax-based, non-profit organization whose mandate is to offer at-risk and homeless youth (ages 12 – 24) the opportunity to break the cycle of homelessness and find a better path. Donation boxes will be placed in the front offices of SIM and CFAME until early to mid-December. Please see the Phoenix House holiday wish list for suggested donations.
On October 20th fellow SIM student Michael Groenendyk and I went to Access 2012 and presented our Killam Library 3D printing and scanning pilot project to a room of over a hundred tech-focused Information Professionals. We’ll have a detailed report on the conference and our presentation in SIM’s upcoming issue of Inform.
You may want to check out some of these notable speakers we got the opportunity to hear:
The first talk on Friday was by Aaron Straup Cope, formerly of Flickr, now working with the Smithsonian National Design Museum. Here’s a video of another great talk he gave in New York: Stories from the New Aesthetic
Art Rhyno was a favourite at the conference—he spoke Saturday morning on his OCR newspaper digitization project at the University of Windsor. He doesn’t often come to Access and many people were eager to meet him.

Alistair Croll presented Friday and held a very memorable talk on Big Data—a great speaker worth hearing and a topic worth looking into.
We’d like to thank the Dalhousie University Libraries and SIM for this great opportunity.
