Alison Froese Stoddard, who is entering the second year of the Master of Library and Information Studies program, is the author of a paper published in the 2013 volume of the Journal of the Royal Nova Scotia Historical Society. Based on a paper she presented in the Society’s public lecture series, “’Making Room for Wildlife and Tourists’: Contrasting Visions over Preserved Landscapes at the Proposed Ship Harbour National Park,” Alison’s published paper describes the extraordinary history of a national park that was never approved, which led to significant changes in Parks Canada practices regarding public involvement in policy development. Further details about the Journal of the Royal Nova Scotia Historical Society are available at www.rnshs.ca and online through libraries that provide access to the journal through a Proquest license.
Employment Opportunity – Novanet Live Help
TheNovanet consortium has three openings for part-time assistants to work on our Live Help virtual reference service. We are looking to hire three people, each of whom will cover three Live Help shifts per week, with each shift lasting two hours, for a total of six hours work per person each week.
The shifts will be scheduled for evenings and weekends (see below for a list of the open shifts). They can be done from home, provided you have a reliable internet connection on your home computer.
Live Help is a virtual chat reference service that covers all the Novanet institutions in the province. Chat is provided from a personal computer, and the providers can expect to answer reference questions coming from any of these institutions using instant messaging software.
Previous experience or training in reference service is essential. The ability to search academic databases is vital, as is the ability to work under pressure, as these shifts can sometimes get busy.
Live Help service operates from September 16 to December 6, starting up again in the first week of January 2014 and continuing into early April 2014.
You will be compensated at a rate of $15/hour.
Interested persons should prepare a brief resume and cover letter, which should be submitted electronically as a single attachment to the following email address: mike.beazley@acadiau.ca.
Also, for each of the following shifts you should indicate if you are available or not available. If you have preferred shifts, those can be indicated as well. Note that live help assistants will generally not be scheduled for more than one 2-hour shift per day.

Welcome to the 2013/2014 academic year
On behalf of my staff and faculty colleagues, I would like to welcome incoming and returning students in the MLIS and MIM programs to the 2013/2014 academic year. We at SIM take pride in our mission:
The School of Information Management, in the Faculty of Management, develops and nurtures dynamic, innovative and practical information professionals who are skilled in the management of information and technology, and who provide leadership and vision in a knowledge-based society.
In collaboration with clients and stakeholders, graduates will promote and advocate the values-based concepts of sustainability and social responsibility in the management of knowledge and information. The school advances the discipline of Information Management by pursuing creative multidisciplinary research.
We look forward to working with all of you over the next few months, and to help ensure that your time with us will provide you with a rewarding learning experience. We encourage you to take full advantage of the interdisciplinary environment of our intellectual and administrative home, the Faculty of Management, and to interact with your colleagues in the four schools. Please stay tuned for the various events that will occur during the academic year; we will place postings on our web site, as well as our media outlets.
Best wishes,
Louise Spiteri
