Another successful Associated Alumni Awards reception
I would like to thank the SIM Associated Alumni for organizing a very successful and enjoyable Awards reception last night to welcome the 2011 Alumna of the Year, Margaret Murphy, the Nova Scotia Legislative Librarian. Ms. Murphy shared valuable words of wisdom with SIM students; naturally, I was very happy when she said that all MLIS students should take cataloguing 🙂
Thanks are due, also, for the invaluable work done by the SIM administrative team of Shanna Balogh, Jenn Cox, and JoAnn Watson, without whom such events would be impossible.
The event is a wonderful opportunity to meet our alumni, who are always so gracious and generous in their support of SIM and our students; furthermore, it enables current students to meet their future professional colleagues.

Margaret Murphy Chosen For 2011 Outstanding Alumni Award
The Dalhousie School of Information Management (SIM) Associated Alumni (AA) is delighted to announce that Margaret Murphy (MLIS ’76) has been chosen as the recipient of the 2011 Outstanding Alumni Award. The award will be presented on September 22 at SIM.
Ms. Murphy has served as the Nova Scotia Legislative Librarian for 26 years. During this time she has revolutionized the Legislative Library, ushering in automation, digitization, preservation and greater access to the public. She has been recognized by the Nova Scotia Legislature more than once for her many efforts. Prior to her long tenure at the Nova Scotia Legislative Library, Ms. Murphy worked for six years as Librarian at the Nova Scotia Department of Attorney General (now the Department of Justice) as well as a stint as the Head of Cataloguing at Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Law Library.
Donna Bourne-Tyson appointed Dalhousie University Librarian
Please join us in congratulating Donna Bourne-Tyson (class of 1990) who has been appointed the University Librarian at Dalhousie. Below is the press release from Dal’s President, Tom Traves:
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Donna Bourne-Tyson as the University Librarian, following a national and international search process. Ms. Bourne-Tyson assumes her new position effective Nov. 1, 2011.
Donna has been the University Librarian at Mount Saint Vincent University since 2005, where she has led numerous innovative changes in that system. In addition, her knowledge of copyright issues will be valuable in informing the strategy of the university as we proceed further into electronic resources. Donna is recognized regionally and nationally in the university library community and we look forward to working with her to expand the reach and effectiveness of the information resources at Dalhousie as we go forward.
Donna is familiar with Dalhousie as an alumna of Dalhousie’s Master of Library and Information Studies program. In addition, she holds a Master of Arts in English Literature from the University of Western Ontario and a Bachelor of Arts from Nipissing University.
Bill Maes has kindly agreed to continue serving as the University Librarian until the end of October. Bill has led the University Library with great vision from a typical books and journal building into the learning hub we have today. I would like to thank him for his exemplary service to Dalhousie over the past 12 years and wish him a productive and well-earned sabbatical year.

Creating a CLA Network for New(er) Academic Librarians
As you know, The Canadian Library Association is undergoing organizational change right now; you can read about it on their CLA Future blog. One of the most visible and most important changes for the general membership is the introduction of networks. CLA Networks will be self-governed, self-initiated groups that meet the short-term and long-term goals of its members (see FAQ Q3 for details).
Megan Fitzgibbons named 2011 CACUL New Academic Librarian of the Year
Congratulations to Megan Fitzgibbons for being chosen as the New Academic Librarian for 2011. Generously sponsored by Ebsco, the New Academic Librarian of the Year Award recognizes innovative ideas and initiatives brought to life by Canadian academic librarians who have completed their MLIS or equivalent within the last five years. The New Academic Librarian of the Year Award will be presented at the CACUL Annual General Meeting on Friday, May 27, during the CLA National Conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
As someone who was fortunate enough to have taught Megan, I am not at all surprised that she has been recognized in this manner. We’re all proud of you at SIM, and I look forward to seeing you at CLA.
