Twitter Networks are like Airline Hub Maps: NPR Morning Edition story

I am pleased to share with you an NPR Morning Edition interview with Dr. Barry Wellman from the University of Toronto, a research collaborator with the Dalhousie Social Media Lab. In the interview, Dr. Wellman discussed findings from a recent study entitled, “Geography of Twitter Networks,” that he co-authored with Dr. Yuri Takhteyev and SIM’s own Dr. Anatoliy Gruzd.

One of the findings from this study shows the importance of “local” ties on Twitter and that Twitter ties closely mirror real world ties and that in some ways they resemble airline hub maps that are usually found on the back of many inflight magazines

Dr. Anatoliy Gruzd Awarded $150k Grant from the Government of Canada and the Province of Nova Scotia to Grow the Social Media Lab at Dalhousie University

Dalhousie University School of Information Management faculty member and Director of the Social Media Lab, Dr. Anatoliy Gruzd, has been awarded a Leaders Opportunity Fund (LOF) award in the amount of $150,000 from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) and the Nova Scotia Research and Innovation Trust (NSRIT).

This new infrastructure grant will allow Dr. Gruzd to continue to grow his social media research lab at Dalhousie. Dr. Gruzd will use the grant to renovate newly allocated space within the Dalhousie Faculty of Management and to purchase new equipment to support the lab’s future projects. Equipment includes new tablets, computers and a large multi-touch video wall that will allow researchers to visualize large datasets on a single screen and discover patterns in online data.

It will allow me and my students to thoroughly analyze and visualize social networks found in social media as well as to create new mobile apps that can help people to easily navigate through the vast amount of social data that is being created on the web. Canada Foundation for Innovation funding is awarded through a rigorous, objective and merit-based national competition process. The information technology research being conducted at the Dalhousie’s Social Media Lab is embedded in a growing industry, advancement made here will help businesses, government and not-for-profit organizations understand how to engage in online conversations with Canadians.

Yesterday, a new research paper, “Geography of Twitter Networks”, published by Dr. Anatoliy and his colleagues Yuri Takhteyev and Barry Wellman from the University of Toronto was featured in an article written by Richard Florida, author of The Creative Class and Who’s Your City.

The article is entitled “How Twitter Proves That Place Matters” appeared in the Atlantic new Cities section.

Elsevier WebApp Concept Design Competition – Winners Announced

Trophy We are pleased to announce the winners of the first ever Elsevier WebApp Concept Design Competition hosted by the Social Media Lab at the School of Information Management. As part of this competition, which is unique in Canada, over 50 students from four different programs (Library and Information Science, Computer Science, Health Informatics, and Engineering) at Dalhousie, competing in 19 teams, had to develop and present an original idea for a new web application for Elsevier’s new SciVerse search and discovery platform. Some of the submissions will eventually be developed into full fledged apps. And now with no further ado, the winners are listed below.

The Social Media Lab at the Dalhousie School of Information Management invites you to attend the first ever Social Media Lab – Elsevier WebApp Concept Design Competition to be held in the Dalhousie University Student Union (6136 University Ave), Room 224 on Tuesday, October 25, 2011, 1-3pm.

Elsevier is offering $3,000 in prizes and challenging Dalhousie students to help more than 15 million researchers, medical professionals, librarians and students navigate scientific content, improve scientific search and discovery, visualize sophisticated data in more insightful and attractive ways and stimulate collaboration.

Since September, over 50 students in 19 teams from four different programs (Library and Information Science, Computer Science, Health Informatics, and Engineering) have been working on various ideas to design the next great web application for Elsevier’s new SciVerse search and discovery platform.

This event is organized as a poster presentation and is open to all members of the Dalhousie community. No registration is required to attend the presentation as a guest. Light beverage and snacks will be provided, courtesy of Elsevier

The theme for this year’s symposium is “Online Communities and Social Media: How companies and organizations can use social media to build communities of loyal clients and supporters.” The symposium will feature keynote speaker Dr. Caroline Haythornthwaite who will present her latest work on “Peer Production: Networks, Crowds and Communities organizing”.

Dr. Haythornthwaite is a Professor and Director of the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies at the University of British Columbia. Previously Dr. Haythornthwaite was a faculty member at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) for 14 years. Her research focuses on how the Internet, computer-mediated communication and information technologies support work, learning and social interaction, and she approaches this primarily from a social network perspective.

The symposium will also feature 6 other experts in Social Media who will be presenting in two complementary sessions: Session I- Social Media Research in Academia and Session II-Panel Discussion on Social Media Use in Business and Academia.

Dr. Anatoliy Gruzd was quoted yesterday in an article that appeared in both the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal and the Vancouver Sun. The story is regarding the Canadian firm Radian6 and how it is monitoring Obama’s Twitter town hall meeting in the US.
