The Document Academy conference (DOCAM) – August 2012
SIM research would be a great fit for The Document Academy conference (DOCAM) to be held at The University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, in August 2012.
Here’s why you might enjoy DOCAM:
1) You don’t have to submit a full paper, just do a 30-minute presentation.
2) Everything is a plenary session. People are friendly and interested and they offer helpful suggestions.
3) Many kinds of documents are represented. I’ve been to three DOCAMs and heard about digitized medieval manuscripts, Obama’s birth certificate, streaming opera performances, museum displays, plans for how to build a kayak, 4-H Club archives, scholars’ personal blogs, metadata, children’s literacy programs in India, books that go on tour, artist’s sketches, and proper techniques for destroying holy scripture, among many others.
4) The weather in London, Ontario in August is… well, it’s… hard to describe!
The call for proposals has been extended to May 25, 2012.
The official website is http://conferences.fims.uwo.ca/DOCAM12/cfp.aspx
Disclaimer: I’m not a conference organizer, just a DOCAM proponent. Email me if you’d like an unofficial view of the conference: eadphd@gmail.com

As you may be aware, the Nova Scotian Institute of Science (NSIS) is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. The Institute has a long history of promoting science to Nova Scotians. Federal Government Cuts Funding for Archives Across the Country
I wanted to draw your attention to this post, written by our part-time Archives instructor Creighton Barrett, about the cuts announced by the Federal Government to archival programs. Creighton discusses the impact of these cuts on the preservation of Canadian cultural heritage, and makes helpful suggestions about what actions can be taken to address these cuts.
SIM alumna Gillian Nowlan is the recipient of the 2012 CLA Emerging Leader Award.
A liaison librarian at the University of Regina’s Dr. John Archer Library, Ms. Nowlan has contributed to the library community at the provincial, national, and international level. Since graduating in 2010 from Dalhousie University’s School of Information Management, Ms. Nowlan has already built up an impressive record of giving back to the profession through her association work and showing leadership well beyond that expected of a first year librarian. Among the accomplishments cited by her nominator:
- Chair of the 2012-13 CLA/OCLC Award for Innovative Technology Jury;
- Helping to create the Canadian Association of Music Libraries’ (CAML) Student Paper Award;
- Co-chairing the Saskatchewan Library Association’s 2012 Conference Planning Committee; and
- Presenting a poster session at the 2012 American Library Association’s Annual Conference.
Ms. Nowlan is the inaugural recipient of the CLA Emerging Leader Award, established in 2012 to recognize a member of the Canadian Library Association with less than 5 years’ experience in the library field who demonstrates leadership or active participation in association work. As the winner, she receives complimentary registration to the 2012 CLA National Conference and Trade Show, including travel and accommodations.
The CLA Emerging Leader Award is generously sponsored by Counting Opinions. “Recognizing and celebrating tomorrow’s library leaders is a unique privilege,” said Frank Biss, Vice President of Customer Services. “Counting Opinions is pleased to be able to lend its support to such a worthy cause.”
The CLA Emerging Leader Award will be presented at the CLA Closing Ceremonies, to be held Saturday, June 2nd during the CLA 2012 National Conference in Ottawa, Ontario.
The Canadian Library Association / Association canadienne des bibliothèques is Canada’s largest national and broad-based library association, representing the interests of public, academic, school and special libraries, professional librarians and library workers, and all those concerned about enhancing the quality of life of Canadians through information and literacy.

Seven Things You Should Never Do On An Interview
This post highlights seven things you should never do in an interview:
- Don’t be late
- Don’t show up unprepared
- Don’t ask about salary, benefits, and perks
- Don’t focus on future roles instead of the job at hand
- Don’t turn the weakness question into a positive
- Don’t lie
- Don’t ask if there’s any reason you shouldn’t be hired
