The Dalhousie University CLA student chapter is pleased to announce that it has been yet another successful and eventful year for their Professional Mentoring Program (PMP).
The PMP program pairs School of Information Management students with professionals in the field in hopes that students may glean advice and guidance from their more experienced colleagues and that both parties might build rewarding relationships to be developed in the years to come.
To wrap up the PMP this year, the CLA student chapter held an exciting book auction and raffle event which took place Tuesday, March 22 at the Rowe Management Building second floor lounge. The event was a raucous success with many students and professionals meeting to chat while bidding against one another on an array of donated books. If participants missed out nabbing their choice books through the live auction, each then had a chance to try their luck once again in the following raffle. Some of the titles donated included Jonathan Franzen’s Freedom: A Novel, Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go, Nimbus Publishing’s South Shore Tastes (cookbook), and many more.
Successful candidates who outbid their opponents for the evening’s choice selections included:
- Penny Logan who took home Jonathan Franzen’s Freedom: A Novel
- Dr. Louise Spiteri, who took home a rather unique Folio Society hard cover edition of Perfume by Patrick Süskind
- Kate MacKeigan took home the Not So Big House (a two volume set)
- Donna Bourne-Tyson lucked out with 100 Photos that Changed Canada
- and David McDonald went home with several volumes of the particularly apropos and author-signed Unshelved series featuring What Would Dewey Do?, Read Responsibly, and Book Club.
The student CLA executive would like to offer a huge thank you and a big round of applause to first year SIM student Jason Harris for being such a great auctioneer (do I see 13, 13 dollars?). Many thanks as well to those who supported the event; whether through joining in on the fun or donating time, money, or (the stars of the event) books.
Monies raised through the PMP wrap-up will help send students to the upcoming CLA Conference; held here in Halifax from May 25-28th. As well, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to SIM’s newly created student chapter of Librarians without Borders to go towards the purchase of books for the Asturias Academy school library collection in Quezaltenango, Guatemala.
I would like to extend my thanks to the organizing committee for their very hard work in putting together the CLA Mentoring program. The wrap-up event was particularly enjoyable and I was delighted with my successful bid in the auction (nicely done, Jason). I actually was a double winner, as one of raffle tickets was picked for the wonderful book about Dewey, the library cat (http://www.deweyreadmorebooks.com/). I cannot think of a better match between book and author.
Oops, I meant book and reader.
That is what I thought, Dr. Spiteri, when your number was the winner! I would have tried to win it if I didn’t already own a copy:)
