Those interested in medical history or the history of the Maritime region now have online access to an exciting new resource, thanks to a successful collaboration between the Dalhousie University Libraries and the Nova Scotia Medical Society/Doctors Nova Scotia. The Nova Scotia Medical Bulletin (Journal from 1988), published from 1922 to 1993, provides unique insight into the progress of health care practice and delivery in the Maritime provinces during those years.
The 5-year project was initiated by librarian Tim Ruggles of the W.K. Kellogg Health Sciences Library (now retired) and supported with funds from Doctors Nova Scotia (previously the Medical Society of Nova Scotia) and the Dalhousie Libraries. The content was digitized and The Nova Scotia Medical Bulletin/Journal is now available online via the Dalhousie University Libraries’ DalSpace repository.
In addition to making the Bulletin/Journal available to researchers everywhere, this project adhered to best-practice guidelines for digitization, accomplishing the important goal of ensuring the long-term preservation of this local treasure.
As a complement to the fully searchable, high-quality scanned copies of each issue of the Bulletin/Journal, an index of the entire collection is also available in DalSpace. The index was created under a project funded by a Hannah Development grant and compiled by Rachel Green.
