Jason spent his summer internship at the Sexton Technology & Design Library. His main duties included:
• Providing technical support, in the form of HTML, CSS and JavaScript implementation for the Sexton Digital Initiatives landing page and the New Life on the Titanic project.
• Creating and updating print, video and online guides (Subject Guides) that will help students understand the databases and resources the library offers.
• Fixing and updating catalogue records using Aleph.
• Working on the reference desk.
Jason has a background in education and radio broadcasting. He holds a Bachelor of Education from Ottawa University, a Bachelor of Arts with honours in history from Carleton University and a radio broadcasting diploma from Loyalist College. He is completing his MLIS degree this summer, and is looking forward to convocation in October.
Before working in libraries, Jason was as an elementary school teacher. He also helped open an independent bookstore, and started his career path as a commercial producer for two radio stations in Peterborough, Ontario.
“Working the reference desk at an engineering library has given me the opportunity to help students and faculty find some fascinating research. As with teaching, there is a great feeling when you help someone learn a new set of skills. You can see a light in their eye as they realize that this new knowledge belongs to them, and they can use it in the future,” says Jason.
