SIM held a very successful retreat today as part of its continual process of assessing and evaluating the MLIS program. Attendees at the retreat included full and part-time faculty, staff, alumni, students, and members of the information management community. SIM is very lucky to have such a supportive network of stakeholders who are always prepared to help us provide a strong, relevant, progressive and innovative MLIS program. I can’t help feeling energized and invigorated by this type of open and collaborative discussion.
Social Media and Networking tools for Scholars
In recent years, social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Myspace have become the preferred medium of communication for many people, and have become an essential tool for building and maintaining online social relationships. Scholars and professionals are also beginning to take advantage of these media to share information and collaborate; consequently, there is a growing number of online communities and social networking sites that cater directly to these user groups.
We @ SocialMediaLab.ca are starting a series of weekly blog posts that will evaluate and review social media and networking tools for scholars like Academia.edu, ResearchGate.net, and SciSpace.net, to name a few. This project will address the ways in which scholars use these tools, the advantages of using them, and also the similarities and connections between different sites and media.
SIM faculty members win awards
Each year during its strategic Retreat, the Faculty of Management announces a series of awards to colleagues. These awards relate to achievements in teaching, research and administration. This year, two members of the School of Information Management were honoured with awards, Drs Anatoliy Gruzd and Fiona Black. Read more on SIM’s News & Events.
Social discovery tools and libraries
At the recent Conference of the Canadian Library Association, I had the opportunity to give a presentation on the research I’m conducting on the use of social discovery tools in public libraries, together with my research partner Laurel Tarulli (Collections Access Librarian, Halifax Public Libraries). Laurie and I co-presented with professional colleagues from the Edmonton Public Library (EPL). Laurie and I are currently examining log analysis of the social discovery tools AquaBrowser (Halifax) and BiblioCommons (EPL). I’m including the slides of our presentation and would welcome your feedback. I think that social discovery tools present many exciting opportunities for libraries to connect with their clients via the catalogue and to enrich catalogue records via user-contributed metadata.
