The American Library Association’s Washington Office is participating in the Google Policy Fellows program. For the summer of 2012, the selected fellow will spend 10 weeks in residence at the ALA Washington Office to learn about national policy and complete a major project. Google provides the stipend for the summer, but the work is directed by ALA and the fellow. Yesterday, a new research paper, “Geography of Twitter Networks”, published by Dr. Anatoliy and his colleagues Yuri Takhteyev and Barry Wellman from the University of Toronto was featured in an article written by Richard Florida, author of The Creative Class and Who’s Your City.
The article is entitled “How Twitter Proves That Place Matters” appeared in the Atlantic new Cities section.
I would like to congratulate all students, faculty, and staff for all their efforts to make the Autumn 2011 term so successful. It’s been a lot of hard work for everyone, but well worth it. Last night’s party was a huge success. Many people worked very hard to organize last night’s festivities, but I think you’ll agree that Elinor Crosby should be thanked in particular. The turnout was excellent, the company delightful, and the food delicious; I am especially thankful to the organizing team who were thoughtful enough to ensure that I had a steady supply of delectable vegan hors d’oeuvres.
This term will mark also the end of Shanna Balogh’s tenure with the School. Shanna has been the bedrock of the School for so many years that it is hard to imagine what it will be like without her. Faculty and staff have had a chance to celebrate with Shanna; I encourage all students to make their good wishes personally to Shanna. Shanna has many activities planned for her retirement; the first of which involves a month in France. So, while we are saddened that Shanna will be leaving us, we all wish her a happy, active, and full retirement.
As assignments and marking wind down this month, I hope that you all have a chance to enjoy the holiday break with your families and loved ones. For those of you who celebrate it, have a very Merry Christmas. I look forward to seeing all of you in the new 2012 academic term.

The time to buy tickets for the SIMSA Holiday Cocktail Party is here! There will be a SIMSA member in the SIM Common Room Monday November 28th to December 2nd to collect your money and take down your name. (There will be no physical tickets.) To add to the fun and festivities we will be doing a Mixed CD/Book exchange. Participation in this is completely optional, but if you do wish to take part please adhere to the following guidelines:
–Your Item must be wrapped.
–Your name must appear somewhere under the wrapping paper
–If you choose to make a CD please include a track list
–If you choose a book please make sure it is one of your favourites and inscribe on the inside a few remarks about why you enjoyed the book and why you think others should read it.
–Please ensure you arrive at The Foggy Goggle no later than 9:00 PM to participate.
We have a fun game planned to distribute the gifts and everyone who brings a gift will be assured a gift in return. If you are considering the book option don’t forget about the SLA/IWB Book sale that is happening Nov. 28 in the SUB from 8-4.
