I just created a new website called AskMeAnything.ca. It’s a place where anyone can ask about issues and topics they’re wondering about, but don’t have time to look into.
Collaborating on AskMeAnything.ca creates an opportunity for friends, family, colleagues and online followers to have research and interviews conducted on their behalf, as well as start conversations on interesting topics.
I came across this interesting article today about an academic library that has established a bike lending program. The author of this post wonders whether this type of service serves to only dilute and diminish the role – and, perhaps more importantly, the perception – of the academic library:
“The problem with offering great coffee, comfy chairs, and bicycle rentals to the library is not that these amenities are unwelcome — indeed, they are appreciated by most patrons. The problem is that they start diluting the brand of the academic library. And a dilution of the academic library brand may make it more difficult to justify hiring, retaining, and compensating highly trained academic staff.”

Job description:
The archival assistant’s duties will include re-housing, scanning and cataloging photographs, research, and preservation of photographs and artifacts. They will also participate in management of an online photo gallery and creation of a virtual artifact online exhibit.
Dalhousie University Archives and Special Collections (DUASC) is seeking an enthusiastic individual to work full-time for approximately 13 weeks on the first phase of a project to digitize university records for inclusion in the university’s institutional repository. The successful candidate will report to the Archives Specialist.

The Saskatchewan Legislative Library invites applications for the position of Members’ Services Research Assistant. Reporting to the Members’ Services Librarian, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing assigned research and customized current awareness services support.
The Library at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is looking for a few good students for short term work.
After two years in storage, the Library of the Maritime Museum is finally moving back into its newly renovated home. We are tentatively scheduled to begin unpacking the week of May 9th with completion by the end of the month. If anyone is looking for 2-3 weeks work, we’re offering $12-$15 per hour for unpacking and re-shelving library materials. Experience working with Dewey and handling rare books would be an asset, but not necessary. Our hours are Monday-Friday from 8:30-4:30. While it would be ideal to have a small team of full time workers for the duration of the project, we’re happy to accept part-timers. Our goal is to get the job done!
